Following the release of the teaser “The Lost Session” last week, Netflix released the first official trailer for its upcoming live action Cowboy bebop Series with John Cho, Danielle Pineda and Mustafa Shakir. The trailer came on the heels of a Live countdown event on YouTube.
The trailer begins with Spike Spiegel (Cho) standing in front of the ascending hangar gates of Bebop and overlooking a futuristic cityscape with his personal spaceship Swordfish II in the background. The scene changes to a shot of the asteroid colony in New Tijuana, in between Spike is interrupted by his old friend Ana (Tamara Tunie) about his new job as a bounty hunter and his partner Jet (Shakir). Spike tells Ana that if she ever needs to find him, his name is Spike Spiegel – which suggests that unlike the original series, “Spike Spiegel” is just an alias he adopted to hide his identity after he died faked his own death and left the Red Dragon Syndicate.
Jet is shown how he steers the bebop to an astral gate and humorously slams one of the roller shutter windows of the ship’s cockpit while the title song of the series “Tank” starts up. From then on, it’s a lot of familiar terrain for fans of the original Bebop
The trailer certainly looks different in appearance and structure than the original anime series and offers a stylized approach to the source material reminiscent of the Wachowskis. Speed racer or Scott pilgrim against the world.
It remains unclear how much of the original 26-episode anime Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop will cover in its first 10-episode season or whether the character of Ed, the genius child hacker and fan-favorite character from the original series, will appear this season, although its existence was apparently hinted at in posted a teaser video on Twitter in the run-up to the release of the teaser “The Lost Season”.
Cowboy bebop will be released on November 19th on Netflix.
