I asked this question last year and when I look back on the list of games I wanted to finish, I’m actually surprised I got some of them. That includes Deadly premonition, Radiant Historia, Pikmin 3, connection between worlds, trace memory, and No more heroes. The connection between them all is that they were available on the Switch or DS and I could play them late at night after everyone fell asleep as I had almost no free time during the day.
This year my backlog has worsened and I haven’t even included the new generation of consoles. Motivated by a feeling of helplessness from the circumstances of this year, I ended up buying a slew of DS / 3DS games on eBay. This contains Kid Icarus Uprising, Dragon Quest IX, Shovel Knight, Moon Knight, Mario and Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story, Castlevania: Portrait of the Ruin, and more. My list of Switch games to hit is mind-blowing with the latest too Fire sign are at the top of the list, followed by Astral chain, Octopath Traveler, Worldend Syndrome, and Luigi’s villa 3. I haven’t made much progress this year with my PS4 backlog, but I’ve added a ton of new games like Resident Evil 3 and the Final Fantasy VII Remake. There are the games that I started that I really liked, but which I had to put on hold for lack of time: Mega Man Legends, Legend of Kage 2, and Shining Force II (This is in my Genesis collection for the Switch). There are also plenty of classic NES, SNES, and Genesis games that I want to revisit, if only to relive them. I usually do an annual playthrough Castlevania 2-4 and hop through my backup files for Final Fantasy IV. I also included the DS version of Chrono trigger because I love to find excuses to keep traveling back in time.
I know falling behind is a good problem. When I was a kid, my family could rarely afford new games, so I had to play the same games over and over until I could get a new game. I think this is where my love for role play was born because they gave so much for their money. Not only are there so many great games these days, but so many that they are epic and have too many things to do. I need to prioritize my list and hope to reach as many as possible.
Kotaku, the question today is, which games behind you do you most hope to finish in the New Year?
