elden ring has many difficult bosses, and the first one you are likely to encounter is Margit the Fell Omen. Polygon’s guide to defeating Margit has tons of helpful combat tips, but our guide – and many others elden ring Guides – important information is missing. What level do you have to be to beat Margit?
The short answer is around level 25. The longer and more accurate answer is that it all depends on your playstyle and patience. The higher you are, the more powerful you become; For example, if you play as a melee fighter and add strength points, you’ll deal more damage and the fight will be over faster.
If you wish, you can fight Margit almost immediately. elden ringIn the huge, sprawling open world of , you can explore almost every location just outside the gate. You can run straight to Margit while still wearing your very first armor and face him before you’ve barely leveled up.
That’s what I did. I didn’t love it and I don’t recommend it.
I’m playing as a hero class, so I started with the ax and shield. I managed to meet Melina before I ran into Margit, so at least I had a chance to level up (and I got my favorite horse). I ran past most of the enemies on my way to Margit, and I think I made it to him before my level hit double digits. I didn’t have the Spirit Calling Bell or any incantations. Hell, I didn’t even have a crafting kit let alone a remedy to summon an NPC to help me.
What I had was a lot of gaming experience Dark Souls, and a lot of patience. I spent my time watching Margit’s attack patterns, rolling and going backwards and only going for the hit when his back was to him. The problem was that every time I managed to hit Margit, I barely did any damage. It felt like throwing single straws at a very tough camel, and I knew it was going to cost a hell of a lot to break his back.
Like I said, I’m patient – but I could also say I shouldn’t be there and the game was only going to get harder from here. So I gave up and figured I should level up a bit first. I didn’t think it would take long. But then I asked other people how long they waited before fighting Margit, and I was shocked to learn that many of my friends and colleagues didn’t beat him until they explored away more of the game.
I decided to explore something; I’ve beaten a few Evergaol baddies, cleared the whole Weeping Peninsula, and snagged way better armor along the way. I made it to level 30 before bothering to hit Margit again with my battleaxe at +5 and my pet jellyfish with Roderika at +1. When I faced Margit again, I even summoned the NPC Rogier and pulled out all the stops. It felt good not just to be strong enough
I asked myself: What about elden ring Players who had a different playstyle, character class, and loadout? What level did you recommend to beat Margit? I’ve asked my colleagues to come up with their own stories of defeating this boss, and while all of our character classes and weapon loadouts are different, we all agreed that getting past level 20 and using summons helps.
“I was a melee slate Confessor, level 26, weapon at +8. I summoned Rogier and Aurelia the Jellyfish with no regrets. I played very aggressively in the first half of the fight while Rogier and Aurelia took hits and were distracted. They both died fairly consistently not long after the second phase, so I switched to rolling through damage, staying close enough to hit him with my sword after long attack chains, and occasionally stepping away to heal and magick him chop.

“I beat Margit pretty early, probably at level 20-25. I’m playing with the Samurai class and I had the starting loadout with the sword probably upgraded to +2 or +3. I beat it on my second try and that’s just because
1.) I used both wolves summon and allies summon right before battle, and
2.) I had a friend, our colleague Austen Goslin, who was watching me on Discord and giving me tips.
I just let Margit whine at the subpoena while I opportunistically wreaked havoc until he died.”

“I defeated Margit at level 26 with a Bandit build, wielding the Half-Human Queen’s Staff in my left hand and the Reduvia Blood Dagger (both obtained by defeating various enemies) in my left hand. I switch my left hand between staff and dagger depending on attack pattern and left FP. Most of my points are thrown into Dexterity and Arcane (arcane abilities down to the blood dagger), with Intelligence, Strength, and then Spirit as my next categories.
To defeat Margit, I used Lone Wolf Ashes to distract him and alternately flashed Glintstone Pebble magic, plus dodge and follow the attack pattern up to where Margit pauses to get a few hits in the back and build up blood loss. This got him about three quarters of the way down fairly painlessly. After running out of FP, I switched to Dual Blades and did a mix of kiting, dodging and hitting for the final quarter – which was more challenging (and frankly more fun).
Took about 15 attempts in total. On my first tries I didn’t really use magic and was level 21. After dying about 10 times I farmed five levels (3 added to intelligence, 2 to sanity) and it was much easier.
