And finally, here’s the most unlikely Ubisoft game to be released in 2023, or maybe ever. Which is incredibly sad.
The original from 2003 Prince of Persia: Sands of Time was insightful. An extraordinary game that reinvented how all third person action games should be played with its amazing rewind time mechanics and fabulous 3D platforming. Unfortunately, no one else ever had the sanity to copy it, and 20 years later we’re stuck in a quagmire of action games that endlessly kill us instead of letting us move on. Oh, and there was this Jake Gyllenyhaal film to rub salt in the wound.
A remake was announced in 2020 with an ambitious January 2021 release date. Spoiler alert: That didn’t happen, and it might have been for the best, given how awful it looked in the trailer above. It was then, quite optimistically, delayed until March ’21 before they seemingly conceded that it looked like a PS3 game and launched it. Later that year, Ubisoft said it would be released in fiscal year 2022-2023, then took it from Indian developers Ubisoft Mumbai and gave it to Ubisoft Montreal before announcing another delay last May without even guessing a fiscal year .
Last November it looked even worse than Ubisoft canceled all pre-orders and returned everyone’s money. Perhaps a useful lesson on why you probably shouldn’t pre-order games that don’t exist yet. The Publisher insists the game will not be cancelledbut hasn’t suggested a new release date yet, meaning that maybe even 2024 is unlikely.
But hey, it will probably come out anyway Before Beyond Good and Evil 2.
