Mystery boxes are a new type of treasure item that can be found in Stardew Valley1.6 update. These chests can be opened to receive rewards, but you will not see any Mystery Boxes in the Valley until you meet certain unlock criteria.
Below we describe where to find Mystery Boxes and how to open them Stardew Valley.
Where to Find Mystery Boxes in Stardew Valley
The Stardew Valley Wiki points out that you will unlock Mystery Boxes once you spend 50 days in the Valley or collect a winning ticket. This is consistent with our experience as we unlocked the Mystery Box cutscene on the evening of Summer 22 in Year 1. Note that we collected (and issued) a prize ticket prior to Summer 22, so we are not 100% sure if there are other requirements paired with the winning ticket.
After completing one of these requirements, a short cutscene will play while you sleep with Mr. Qi dropping these crates throughout the valley.
Once this happens, you’ll start digging up these bad boys as normal Stardew Valley Tasks such as:
- Hoeing grave sites (the little wiggling worms in the ground)
- Fishing for treasure chests
- Defeat enemies
- Mining of rocks and ores
You can also get them as rewards at the Trout Derby and SquidFest events mentioned above.
How to Open Mystery Boxes in Stardew Valley
You can open Mystery Boxes in the Blacksmith, just like geodes. Clint will break it open for you 25 gold each and they can contain a wealth of items.
We found seasonal harvest seeds, Warp Totems, Coffee, and even more Mystery Boxes inside, making them a nice reward for completing your regular farming tasks.
