Final Fantasy 14 has plenty of fights in different difficulty levels, including Extreme testswhich are easier than wild raids, but more difficult than the story trials players will encounter.
Below we explain everything you need to know about extreme experiments in FFXIVand where the individual extreme tests can be unlocked in each expansion.
Extreme Trials in FFXIV, Explained
Extreme Trials are more difficult versions of existing Trials that reward high-level gear (at the time of their introduction) and other rewards such as mounts, crafting materials, and orchestrions.
At the time of their respective releases, Extreme Trials are difficult and require a party willing to communicate positions and patterns to complete them (as opposed to a normal trial where you can just queue up and defeat them). Instead of using the Service Finder to find a party to complete Extreme Battles with, you must resort to using Party Finder.
As soon as a new extension is released, you can Unsync the trials from the previous expansion, so you can fight them without your equipment being down-synced to the level of the boss. For example, after Shadowbringer started, you could then desynchronize Byakko and quickly defeat him with a higher level and better equipment. This way you can farm a mount or equipment without having to pay for it to a lot of attention to the often complex mechanics.
Completing the Extreme Trial will reward you with one of the boss’ weapons and a chance to drop the other loot mentioned above. Each time you complete it, you will also receive a totem for this boss (except for the extreme trials in A reborn kingdom, that don’t use totems). Some longer fights even reward two totems, like Hades or Barbariccia. You can trade totems at vendors to get specific weapons you need at a 10:1 ratio, or the mount at a 99:1 ratio if you were unlucky with your loot rolls.
All Extreme Trials require you to complete the normal version of the trial first before you can unlock it, so if you haven’t unlocked all of the trials yet (especially since some are optional), you should do that first.
Where can I unlock A Realm Reborn’s Extreme Trials?
ARRThe Extreme Trials are the only ones that have a somewhat complicated method of unlocking. Most Trials (Garuda, titanium, Ifrit, Good King Moggle Mog XII, Leviathan, RamuhAnd Shiva) are unlocked by clicking Urianger in the Waking Sands (in West Thanalan):
He gives you a quest line that starts with “Primal Nature,” and as you complete each quest, you advance in the story and unlock the next quest to unlock the next extreme.
Unfortunately, you have to unlock them in order, as they are part of an actual quest chain. Fortunately, these fights can be completed quickly with unsynced settings if you are around level 70 or higher (with appropriately leveled gear). If not, you can always create a party finder group and say it’s for a first completion – experienced players will help you out if they have Poetics and Miraculous Tails Repeat attempts as a reward.
The extreme version of Ultimate Weaponentitled “The Minstrel’s Ballad: Ultima’s Bane”, is actually unlocked by another NPC. Speak to Alys in Mor Dhona to start and unlock the quest “The Ultimate Ballad”:
The mounts were given as a reward for A reborn kingdom Extreme tests are based on Horseswith each trial yielding a uniquely colored glowing horse. Garuda, Titan, and Ifrit also have a chance to drop a special black unicorn mount that nightmare. Good King Moggle Mog XII does not drop a riding whistle. If you collect all six mounts (except Nightmare), you can unlock the Kirin through the quest “A legend for a legend.”
Where can you unlock Heavensward’s Extreme Trials?
Here too, most exams are unlocked by the same person: Unukalhai in the Rising Stones (Mother Dhona):
In contrast to the ARR Quests you can complete any of the Heavensward Quests in any order, so you can unlock the Extreme Trials in the order you want. The quests and their respective unlocks are as follows:
- “The devilish Bismarck” – “The boundless blue (Extreme)” (Bismarck)
- “Thok around the clock” – “Thok ast Thok (Extreme)” (Ruined)
- “A Devilish Resemblance” — “Containment Bay S1T7 (Extreme)” (Sephirot)
- “A Divine Simulacrum” – “Containment Bay P1T6 (Extreme)” (Sophia)

Two of the Heavensward Extremes are again hidden behind quests from Alys in Mor Dhona:
- “Thordan’s Reign” – “The Minstrel’s Ballad: Thordan’s Reign” (King Thordan)
- “Nidhogg’s Rage” – “The Minstrel’s Ballad: Nidhogg’s Rage” (Nidhögg)

You can exchange the Rathalos Scale+ for armor, a Poogie Servant, a Monster Hunter Orchestrion Scroll, or the Rathalos mount at the Blacksmith Shop in Kugane (next to the Hearty Hunter). You need 50 Rathalos Scale+ to get the mount.
Where can you unlock Shadowbringers Extreme Trials?

There is actually another extreme battle, but there is no normal version of this test: “Memoria Misera (Extreme)”, where you fight against Varis yae Galvus. This is just an extended eight-person version of the instanced quest where you have to fight Varis as part of the Bozja questline (the same quests you do to get your Shadowbringer Relic Weapon). After completing the quest “The Bozja incident”, you can unlock the Extreme Battle by using the Wandering Dramaturg in Gangos:
You can exchange the totems for C’intana in Mor Dhona in exchange for chests that give you special armor: dyeable versions of level 80 artifact armor. At this point, it’s only worth farming Glamour. You can’t get a mount from Varis, but he does drop a Triple Triad card, which is required for the Triple Triad mount.
Where can I unlock the Endwalker Extreme Trials?
Thank God there is some simplicity. Endwalker Extreme trials unleash a guy: the Wandering minstrel in old Sharlayan:
Here, too, you simply have to talk to him about your heroic deeds to unlock the respective extreme battle.
You can Endwalker Totems in for equipment to Nesvaaz in Radz-at-Han.
The brackets for Endwalker are large kittens also called Lynxes. If you get all seven Lynx mounts, you can Apocrypha Bahamut Mount via the “Wings of Hope“-Quest.
