Marvel’s Latest Disney Plus Series, moon knight, took a bow in classic Marvel fashion with his final episode: A Shocking Revelation delivered via the credits scene. Also in classic Marvel fashion, Moon Knight’s credit scene raises many more questions than it answers, and its final episode has many clues and few concrete solutions.
Has Khonshu regained his status among the other gods after being right about Ammit? What about Marc and Layla’s strained relationship? And what does Layla’s future hold?
Here’s everything we ended up wondering moon knight‘s finale and how Marvel Comics might have the answers.
[Ed. note: This post contains spoilers for all of Moon Knight, in case you hadn’t figured that out.]
Who is that Jake Lockley in the credits scene?
moon knight‘s credits scene reveals a secret the show has been keeping since its second episode: Marc and Steven aren’t the only people on her mind. There’s a third personality that none of them know, and his name is Jake Lockley.
Throughout Marvel Comics history, Marc Spector’s head has belonged to many people (including in 2011). moon knight
The three personalities allowed the hero to live a life in all strata of superhero society: Moon Knight/Marc Spector as a trained mercenary turned vigilante/avatar; Steven Grant as the billionaire who funded it all; and salt-of-the-earth cab driver Jake Lockley as the eyes and ears of the criminal underworld.
moon knight hinted at the existence of a third personality early in the series, and sprinkled the story with moments where both Steven and Marc experienced the blackouts that usually indicated the other was taking over. In Steven’s madhouse-like mindset, director and executive producer Mohamed Diab made sure to include multiple shots of a sinister black sarcophagus standing upright and shaking from side to side as if someone were trapped inside.
Now we know exactly who was in there: Jake Lockley from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. At this point we don’t know much about him. Jake’s signature mannerism seems to speak Spanish, with Marc speaking English with an American accent and Steven with a British accent. Driving a limousine fits the character’s comical origins as a taxi driver, but he’s known for building Moon Knight’s network of underworld informants, not for being the personality most comfortable with killing people.
Then again, the show’s Steven is a far cry from the suave billionaire of the comics. At the moment, Marvel hasn’t announced any future Moon Knight projects, so it’s unclear when we’ll hear more about Jake.
What is wrong with the gods and Khonshu?
Jake isn’t the only star in the Moon Knight movie scene: Khonshu has picked up some modern threads and mediation. A well-dressed Khonshu is a staple of Moon Knight comics, and he looks just as good in live action as he does on page. But while Jake kills Harrow (with Ammit inside him), completing Khonshu’s mission to defeat his rival goddess, the finale doesn’t reveal much more about his newfound divine status.
Did the other gods admit that Khonshu was right about Ammit? Are you grateful for his intercession? Or angry that he broke out of custody? The answers are anyone’s guess. Though the fact that he’s groping around in a snazzy suit and limousine seems to portend a rise in the world.
Is Layla a superhero now?
moon knight‘s latest episode gives us no clues as to the future of Marc Spector and Layla El-Faouly’s marriage. And comics can’t help us much here, because Layla is an almost entirely original character for the moon knight TV series. However, with the series’ final installment, it also becomes a loose adaptation and major update of an obscure Egyptian Marvel superhero: the Scarlet Scarab.
First introduced on the pages of the World War II Set Series invaders In 1977 (created by Roy Thomas, Frank Robbins, and Frank Springer), the Scarlet Scarab’s powers of strength, flight, and energy absorption/blasting were imparted through an artifact called the Ruby Scarab. He guest-appeared in some issues and fought against European rule in Egypt, but only reappeared in the early 1980s when his son took over the Mantle of the Scarlet Scarab for…an issue of Thor. And that’s pretty much all for the character’s story.
Where this all connects to Layla is in her name. The original Scarlet Scarab appeared in the pages of Marvel Comics with the name Abdul Faoul – and the name of Layla’s late father moon knight was Abdallah El-Faouly. No one really calls her the Scarlet Scarab on the show, but the people behind it do moon knight have confirmed that the connection is wanted.
While Layla Tawaret said her new powers are a temporary situation, you can bet the Scarlet Scarab will also return when Moon Knight returns in a future Marvel Cinematic Universe project.
