Craig Mazin and HBO’s The last of us It looks like it will largely stick to the story laid out in developer Naughty Dog’s The last of us, which takes Joel and Ellie through the mushroom-ridden United States. But judging by the trailer, there’s at least one big exception: Melanie Lynskey.
Monday is The last of us Teaser trailer also served as a casting announcement for Yellow jackets Star Melanie Lynskey in the HBO series. She plays a character named Kathleen, a “ruthless leader of a revolutionary movement in Kansas City,” an HBO representative told Polygon. Joel and Ellie travel across much of the country in the games – from Massachusetts to Pennsylvania before continuing on to Wyoming, Colorado and Utah. Her journey through the middle of the country is mostly skipped in the game, but it sounds like the HBO show will fill in some of those blanks. Between Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Jackson, Wyoming, it sounds like Ellie and Joel are also visiting Kansas City, Missouri.
If you followed me The last of us‘ Casting announcements, this may not be news to you. HBO confirmed this to IGN In early August, two notable characters from the game, Henry (played by Lamar Johnson) and Sam (Keivonn Woodard) will meet Ellie and Joel in Kansas City instead of Pittsburgh, the original setting. At the time, HBO said Sam and Henry were “in hiding from a revolutionary movement seeking revenge,” and it appears Kathleen von Lynskey is the ringleader behind that group.
Usually when I think about it The last of us, The word “revolutionary” is associated with the Fireflies, the group that fought oppressive government control and the Federal Disaster Response Agency (FEDRA) in the country’s quarantine zones. But Kathleen’s group sounds more like the hunters, who were basically all the nameless villains in the game – and the ones who chase Ellie, Joel, Sam and Henry around in that infamous armored truck.
My theory is that the HBO show will build this group up a bit more, making them feel more organized under Kathleen’s leadership. Of course, this is all speculation; I’m not sure if we’ll get answers there a few episodes ago The last of us‘ 10-episode season premiering in 2023, HBO said.
