During an Anime Expo interview, I spoke to creator Yoko Taro (NieR Automata), Atsushi Ohkubo (Fire department), Hiroyuki Seshita (Class) and the Jin of the same name (Kagerou project) about how they came together to make the upcoming anime sci-fi Death Game Anime, KamiErabi GOD.App.
In KamiErabi GOD.App High school students compete in a series of death games for a chance to be crowned the new god of their world. While the premise of KamiErabi GOD.App. is narratively similar to The future diaryhis creators say his world is even crazier.
“I mean, it’s really crazy. The world we live in is already crazy. I mean it’s super crazy. And what we’re doing is that we’re basically a perfect fit for the world we live in,” said director Seshita my city. “From the start we were like, ‘Okay, let’s do it like this [the anime feels like] Strange things happen from the start. And every time we’ve worked on it, we’ve tried to give it something crazy because that fits our world.”
Despite KamiErabi GOD.AppAccording to Seshita, the anime fits better into the fantasy genre due to the death game premise. You can Check out the trailer.
How KamiErabi GOD.Appgot together for the anime
While the anime’s premise promises to be a wild ride, the collaboration between the people working on the series is even crazier given their busy schedules. When I asked how the quartet came to be teaming up for the anime, Taro, who the others credit as the one who spearheaded the collaboration, said it all happened over drinks.
“When I realized that Seshita-san would be there – I was really a fan of his work – I said at least we could go have a drink and see what happens,” Taro said.
When he c alled the leader, Taro waved his hand KamiErabi GOD.App
“If we hadn’t all been in this situation where we were looking for something different or a transition in our careers, maybe [KamiErabi GOD.App] “It wouldn’t have happened, but I think it’s great,” Taro said. “We all did things in our own way. Once we all got together and really joined forces, it all miraculously came together.”
Jin and Ohkubo were told to be brave and go crazy KamiErabi GOD.App
Taro credited Seshita’s guidance as a crucial part of their collaborative creative process, assisting character designer Ohkubo and series composer Jin, young “passionate” artists used to creating on their own, by directing them to create their new anime series all to give a bold and provocative new experience for viewers.
“For me, [working on KamiErabi GOD.App] was actually this feeling of utter irresponsibility. In the truest sense of the word, I didn’t feel the pressure of responsibility at all. It was just fun,” said Ohkubo. “But if we didn’t have the Ass Whip [Seshita] Taking responsibility and getting the team in shape wouldn’t have happened.”
Jin, who wrote the music for it Kagerou project alone, said the producers wanted his role on the project to help shape it KamiErabi GOD.App turning it into a show that turns it into an anime “would work”. However, when Seshita approached him, Jin said he asked him to devote 100% of his life to creating something “really bold and daring” that would surprise people.
“Even if someone in Japan says to you, ‘Okay, do what you want, right?’ Everything goes. All is well.’ They usually don’t mean it. In my case, however, I literally took them at their word. I said, “Quite literally, anything is possible.” “I’ll do what I want,” Jin said. “And when I did that, the director and the producer told me they were kind of surprised and they were like, ‘Wow, that’s kind of Sugoi.'”
Until the last second of work KamiErabi GOD.AppJin said he had to push his limits when working on the anime to ensure it would live up to both his expectations and those of his co-creators.
“The momentum we had as a team and the individual traits we brought to the table was what I think made it successful,” Jin said.
KamiErabi GOD.App Slated for release on Crunchyroll in October.
