If you’ve ever played Final Fantasy Game and was impressed with the characters or pixel graphics on display – which I will assume all from you– then there are much worse things you could spend part of your Monday evening doing than watching this short documentary.
Prepared by the always wonderful archipelago, in collaboration with the Japanese site Game * Spark, consists of interviews with Yoshitaka Amano and Kazuko Shibuya, who talk about their work on the series, how they started, how they met and the visuals of the Final Fantasy Series developed as the couple continued to work together over the years, Amano producing the iconic character and cover of the series, Shibuya being responsible for so many of the forerunners.FFVII
It’s fascinating for all of the insights and memories they share, but it’s also just a joy to sit back and see them both at work. Amano draws a storm effortlessly, Shibuya points out the subtleties and invisible details that are packed into each individual pixel.
While the 12-minute video is obviously entirely in Japanese, official English subtitles are also available.
And if you feel like looking at more of Amano’s works, it was one of our very first subjects art series.
