The work of the fans is often even more surprising than the work done by the studios or the publishers themselves. For years we have seen a multitude of classic game remake projects, some of them hoping to make the whole game, and some, just like tech demos of what we might see someday.
Of course, the Final Fantasy saga is one of the most recognized today, but for years it has left us with great projects that are among the best titles of each generation. One of the best episodes for many fans of the franchise is ‘Final Fantasy IX’, a title that Square Enix may not have as present as FF VII or FF X.
Perhaps because this is not one of the two previously named episodes, there are currently no plans of any kind to do a Final Fantasy IX remake. However, a group of fans worked a lot to imagine what a remake would look like with current technology (Unreal Engine 5), recreate for her the famous city of Alexandria.
Dan Eder and Colin Valek are responsible for the project Final Fantasy IX: Project Memoria which currently has 28 artists working to recreate Final Fantasy IX storylines with current development engines. It’s, yes, a purely visual project, you wouldn’t expect it to turn into a game (something Square Enix surely would never allow).
