A preview of Warframe’s Void Angels enemy, coming April 27

Even before our first Cinematic Quest was released seven years ago, the Zariman Ten Zero represented one of Warframe’s greatest mysteries. It’s a massive colony ship stranded in a mind-bending dimension called The Void that exists outside of space and time. It is also the setting for a supernatural and violent tragedy that created Warframe’s player protagonists, the Tenno.

On April 27, Tenno finally returns to this derelict ship to confront his past in Angels of the Zariman, a free update for PS4 and PS5 players that lets you step straight into this shrouded and gory chapter in the story of Warframe. Drawn to an ethereal song radiating through the origin system, players will discover how years of exposure to the Void have transformed the Zariman into a place both beautiful and haunting, where ghosts of the past now lurk its lush corridors. and overgrown with vegetation. Today I want to remove the shroud only a bit to talk about one of these ghosts: Void Angels.

A celestial choir

When Tenno briefly visited the Zariman Ten Zero as part of last year’s The New War update, one of the most disturbing things they witnessed was the vaguely humanoid shapes that formed from of the Void’s molt that froze throughout the ship. In Angels of the Zariman, these elegant and disturbing statues come to life when encountering the main boss of the update. Void Angels are closely tied to the mysterious tragedy that occurred aboard the Zariman so many years ago, and their creation has been one of the most exciting and daunting challenges of this entire upgrade. day.

When we started working on The New War, our art team started exploring all the ways The Void could warp the Zariman. We took inspiration from the concept of fractals – endless patterns that get more intricate the closer you look – and the extraterrestrial aspect of sea life, and started exploring what it might look like. when applied to humanoid forms. The result was these hauntingly beautiful statues that flowed almost like liquid mercury. Half-recognizable faces in a twisting chrome shell.

When we saw the result, we knew these Void Angel Statues could be so much more than just scenery decoration. So we started planning for when we could turn them into a challenging new boss and kept their true purpose a closely guarded secret.

Warframe is already known for its unique aesthetic, but Void Angels asked our art, animation, design, and audio teams to really push themselves to create a boss unlike anything Tenno had encountered before.

Even before you fight one, you’ll sense the danger the Void Angels pose. Their chant echoes through the halls of the Zariman, turning into chilling cries as they close in on your position. And you’re not just fighting void angels in a single plane of existence either. Players will need to weaken the Void Angel and switch to their Operator in order to enter a Void Pocket Dimension to battle the Angel’s true form. This pocket dimension is a whole different arena of combat, which will test your mastery of your Operator’s Void abilities as you face off against the Angel of the Void. While in this ethereal form, the Void Angel will bombard you with projectiles that cover the arena with damaging Void Corruption. And once you’ve weakened it enough, you’ll need to gather Shattered Protection Fragments to protect yourself against a fatal energy attack.

It’s just kind of what you can expect when you first encounter Void Angels. Along with our new Thrax Centurion enemy type, which we revealed in Devstream 160, players will need to use every tool in their Warframe and Operator arsenal to stay alive in Angels of the Zariman’s three new mission modes. .

While the Void Angels and Thrax Centurions are sure to keep you moving as you explore the Zariman, there’s so much more in this update that we can’t wait for players to experience. You’ll be able to fight enemies as Gyre, our 49th Warframe, decorate and upgrade your very own Dormizone apartment, discover powerful new weapons that evolve and take on new characteristics as you complete challenges, and even change the texture and material certain Warframes with our new Void Shell skins – opening up a whole new realm of mode framing for certain Warframes. And it’s all wrapped up in a new quest that will finally reveal some of the mystery surrounding the Zariman itself.

Hope you enjoyed this little taste of what to expect in Angels of the Zariman when it launches on PS4 and PS5 on April 27th.
