Earlier this week, when Sony officially announced the acquisition of Housemarque, an image mistakenly uploaded by PlayStation Japan apparently confirmed Demon’s Souls developer Bluepoint as well. The image, which uses the same style as the one in the aforementioned purchase, featured the Returnal protagonist in it, suggesting that this was scheduled to be revealed after the Finnish signing.
To put it bluntly, the image was highly suspect – it wasn’t a mistake because extra effort had gone into designing it. And if the owner of the platform has marketing materials ready to publish, then perhaps it is fair to assume that the deal is closed, or at least, almost done, behind the scenes. However, the remastering specialist has poured cold water on speculation.
An update to its Twitter profile now emphasizes that it is a “totally independent, self-funded study.” He also added the same language to a bunch of draft lists, even though it wasn’t there before. Why go into this kind of endeavor if acquisition talks are already at a late stage is beyond us, but we’re also baffled as to why Sony has clearly designed an image to announce a purchase that may not even happen. Let’s wait and see if there is any movement on this over the next week.
