World-class materia hunter, the one and only Yuffie!
Could you discuss Yuffie’s design for the remake and what you were trying to accomplish?
Tetsuya Nomura: I would say I mostly wanted to know if she looked her age or not. Yuffie is younger than the other core members as she is still a teenager.
While Cloud and her company have juvenile faces as well, I wanted Yuffie to look even younger and not completely adult, so compared to her, Cloud and her team seem more mature to a certain extent.
Explore Sector 7 from a whole new perspective
We saw Weiss and a tribute to the Moogle outfit from Dirge of Cerberus – Final Fantasy VII, but were there any other details about Yuffie being removed from expanded FFVII media?
Nomura: I didn’t necessarily want to pay homage, but I wanted Yuffie to appear in disguise at first. I remembered that she was dressed like this in Dirge of Cerberus – Final Fantasy VII, so I gave her a similar look here. The same goes for Weiss – I chose him because he is a powerful enemy outside of Sephiroth.
Do you remember your headspace and emotions when designing Yuffie in the original FFVII? What were you thinking then and how has your perspective on her changed over time?
Nomura: At the time of the original and even now, my outlook on her hasn’t changed much. Yuffie is an energetic and straightforward character. That being said, since this episode centers around her, I think we were able to portray her sensitive side as well.
Since the original came out, we’ve seen Yuffie’s design change in Advent Children and Dirge of Cerberus, but how do you imagine your designs?
Nomura: I usually try not to change her figure. I also make sure to match her signature elements, such as her shorts, as close to the original as possible.
Even the most out of reach items don’t live up to Yuffie’s Shuriken
Yuffie’s massive shuriken is iconic. When you imagine a ninja, you imagine various weapons like the Kunai, or a small katana, but what made you choose the shuriken?
Nomura: The reason is that among all the weapons that ninja work could use in Final Fantasy titles released before Final Fantasy VII, the shuriken was particularly powerful.
Yuffie teams up with Sonon to unleash Synergized Windstorm’s devastating attack.
Yuffie is very playful in the original FFVII. From a personality standpoint, how does this approach to his character differ from the original game?
Nomura: When you consider Yuffie in a large group, you can’t help but notice how energetic she is, but I think she’s also a character whose inner workings become more noticeable as you get closer. In this episode, you will mainly follow Yuffie and a new character, her partner Sonon. So, I believe you will be able to get closer to Yuffie than usual.
How did the team decide to make Yuffie the main character of this DLC, instead of Vincent or Cid?
Nomura: The overall story follows the original, so given where it is in the timeline, Vincent is still asleep and Cid is on Shinra’s side, so only Yuffie was able to move around freely.
For Wutai’s Glory – Yuffie is a force to be reckoned with.
