Street Fighter V’s latest digital event revealed new details about the latest character, Luke, who will be a key player in the upcoming Street Fighter project. We’re not ready to talk about it just yet, but let’s dive into Luke in SFV and his unique gameplay mechanics.
SFV The final fighter enters the ring
SFV’s fall update kicked off with a preview of Luke’s story mode. It follows a dramatic childhood event that inspires him to become a fighter, join the military, and meet a familiar face.
We’re not going to spoil too much here. Play Luke’s Character Story to find out more.
Luke gets closer and gets personal
Luke focuses on forward attacks that keep the pressure up. The three normal hits move Luke forward, allowing him to reduce distances offensively. Luke also has two perfect target combos for racking up damage.
Luke’s target combos are great for dealing damage
Luke’s special moves allow him to close safely and create offensive opportunities. A medium to long range projectile called a “Sand Blaster” shoots energy from its hands. “Rising Rocket” is an anti-aircraft movement that launches Luke upwards to attack airborne opponents.
“Avenger” is a forward dash that Luke can string together in combos and allows him to cover more ground. It has two sequels: “No Chaser,” a shoulder load that can be integrated into combos, and “Impaler,” a mid-range aerial kick.
“Flash Knuckle” is Luke’s starter and expansion combo. Each punch leads to a different forward attack.
HP ver. moves away from almost half of the screen
Holding punches performs a charged version of “Flash Knuckle” and grants it different properties, depending on which button is pressed.
A familiar but unique V-system
Luke’s V-System, while familiar, has some special properties, especially with his V-Triggers. His V-Skill I, “Hard Shot”, charges “Flash Knuckle” without having to hold and charge the movement. If you charge up after using “Hard Shot” it performs an upgraded version with more damage and combo potential.
V-Skill II, “Suppressor”, knocks Luke back quickly before delivering a blow to the body. Different from a parry, it excels against throws and taking orders when timed correctly. While seemingly defensive, this move keeps Luke on the attack by taking accurate readings and suppressing breakouts.
Luke’s V-Triggers are unique, as both cause his V-Gauge to become a timer that constantly fills in a neutral state. Additionally, Luke can gain V-Timer by doing damage. Conversely, he loses the V-Timer when hit or uses his V-Trigger moves. They are the first SFV
V-Trigger I, “Fully Armed,” gives Luke access to two new moves, which we revealed during the SFV Summer Update 2021. Press HP + HK after activation to launch three long-range projectiles called “Rock Smasher”.
Activate “Fully Armed” and hit your opponents!
“Thermobaric Thrash” can only be executed from a “Sand Blaster” EX. It adds tons of damage, but the EX meter should be used wisely.
“Thermobaric Thrash” deals a lot of damage but can only be used after EX “Sand Blaster”
V-Trigger II, “Vanguard”, allows Luke to cancel any “Flash Knuckle” into another of a different strength. This opens up previously unavailable combo paths, allowing Luke to double down on “Flash Knuckles” in his combos.
“Vanguard” can chain together “Flash Knuckles” of varying strengths for extended combos and extra damage!
Luke is fully armed and ready to fight on November 29e with additional costumes. Make sure to prepare yourself before Luke joins the fight by collecting the Season 5 character or Premium Pass.
Now that we know how Luke plays, let’s see him in action.
