The new series of The Last of Us does not have a release date yet, but today it became known thanks to Kantemir Balagov that the first episode of the series is now ready. The Russian is one of the directors chosen for the series and, we can infer from his post on Instagram, that he will only be involved in the pilot.
And is that the same says goodbye in its publication mentioning several members of the set such as Pedro Pascal or the cinematographer Ksenia Sereda. At the end it says “PS: Back to Mother Russia”, so it seems his role is over, for now.
Filming in Canada
For now sources indicate that all the filming of the first episode was done in Alberta, Canada, specifically in High River and Fort Macleod. Both are small towns in the region where the HBO crew could be seen filming in residential areas. Apparently they warned well in advance and closed a couple of streets.
Now the filming would move to Calgary where several buildings would have been built for the filming. These may be used for the game’s opening scenes or passages where Ellie and Joel attempt to escape the Hunters prowling the apocalypse-hit areas of this particular world.
In accordance with DualShockers There are at least two other confirmed directors for the series, Jasmila Žbanić and Ali Abbasi. However, we do not know whose turn it is to direct the second episode or if Balagov will return for filming at another time. HBO usually has between 4 and 5 directors for this type of series so there is still a lot to shoot.
Possible premiere in 2022
For now, all the filming has been done in Canada, so it seems that Pedro Pascal (Joel), Bella Ramsey (Ellie), Gabriel Luna (Tommy) and Anna Torv (Tess) will walk around the province of Alberta quite a bit.
As we said, we don’t have a release date yet, but this first episode was shot in about two months. As there are 10 episodes, the calculation is simple, more or less a year of filming, plus post-production, so we imagine that the series will premiere at the end of 2022.
