The latest Genshin Impact teaser has arrived, providing important background information for the game’s 1.5 update. The trailer focuses on the story, with an emphasis on Genshin Impact’s ongoing narrative in the Liyue region.
Following Genshin Impact Update 1.5, developer miHoYo released the trailer, aptly named ‘Through the Eyes of a Dragon’ as it focuses on the liberation of Azhdaha from earth by Geo Archon Rex Lapis. Like the other Genshin Impact trailers, ‘Through the Eyes of a Dragon’ is primarily a window into one of the game’s world’s creation myths, as well as focusing on the Liyue region, where the game takes place. in update 1.5.
The trailer offers a detailed account of Geo Archon Rex Lapis’s launch of one of Genshin Impact’s newest bosses, Azhdaha, from below ground and their subsequent victories together in battle. This is told from two perspectives, through the narrator (who has narrated previous Genshin Impact trailers) and directly from Rex Lapis himself. Both characters take turns giving information about Azhdaha, who yelled at the Geo Archon to surface and see the sun.
The Archon took pity on him and brought him to the surface, then carved his rocky edifice into that of a ‘vivid representation of a dragon’. The Archon gives the dragon eyes to see the world and Azhdaha emerges from the rock in the form of a real dragon. Azhdaha has become a weekly boss in Genshin Impact’s latest game update 1.5, which is unlocked by completing one of the Zhongli story missions. Zhongli is a playable character in Genshin Impact, and the current ship of the Geo Archon Rex Lapis, who appears in the trailer. Fans of the character will likely be interested in learning something new about him, told directly from his perspective.
What some people may not know about Zhongli in this Genshin Impact trailer is that the story of the Geo Archon and Azhdaha is likely an account of a Chinese myth about a Buddhist painter named Zhang Sengyao. The artist was commissioned to paint four dragons on the wall of a temple, but when he got to work on the painting, viewers noticed something curious about the image; Zhang had forgotten to paint the eyes of the dragons. However, Zhang explained that he had done it on purpose, as the eyes are the dragon spirit, and if he added them, the dragons would come to life and fly away.
The people around him scoffed at his explanation, but it was quickly proven wrong, as Zhang quickly painted four dots, thus giving two of the dragons pupils. Lightning struck the temple wall and the two dragons came to life, flying from the wall into the sky. This story gave rise to a Chinese idiom: “Paint the dragon, dot the eyes”, which means adding extra touches to something that is already cool to make it perfect. This unique version of the story brings interesting context to the Liyue region of Genshin Impact and, together with update 1.5, could be considered one of miHoYo’s added touches to an already well-loved game.
Genshin Impact is available now for mobile devices, PC, PS4, and PS5, and is in development for the Nintendo Switch.
