PlayStation and Guerrilla Games release more Horizon Forbidden West gameplay footage of Aloy’s new abilities, tools, weapons, and more.

PlayStation 5 has a whole category of upcoming sequels that get gamers excited. Fans of one of the most anticipated, Horizon Forbidden West, were given a fresh look at the game’s action. Today, Guerrilla Games releases new images of Horizon Forbidden West on Twitter, while the Official PlayStation Blog gave fans some all-new key elements and mechanics coming to the game.

The game world itself is more suited to the player’s freedom of exploration and journey, and with many new aspects of Aloy’s enhancements, Guerrilla Games is also looking to evolve the combat of Horizon Forbidden West. New weapons, upgrades and abilities will help Aloy tackle the expanded variety of enemy encounters in the dangerous West. Aloy’s primary mode of combat in Horizon Zero Dawn was to use ranged weaponry, most commonly bows. This, of course, will be a return emphasis in Horizon Forbidden West, but there will supposedly be a greater number of gear options, including new weapons and armor, with the ability to upgrade both.

Horizon Forbidden West’s combat mechanics will be supported by a revamped skill tree. There will be many abilities returning from the RPG mechanics of Horizon Zero Dawn, but with a greater emphasis on close combat. Guerrilla Games seems to expect these new approaches to combat to be used in an attractive way through the game’s more varied combat encounters, which will include more difficult fights against humans and machines.

Many of Aloy’s tools from Horizon Zero Dawn will return. The new PlayStation blog post specifically mentions that Hunter Bow, Sharpshooter Bow, and Blast Sling will make their return. While these weapons are expected to have all or most of their previous capabilities, they will also come with some new updates, such as ammo types. What’s more exciting, though, is that Forbidden West will bring brand new weapons to Aloy’s arsenal. One that has featured prominently in promotional material thus far is the Spike Thrower. Designed by the Oseram tribe, this throwing weapon will deal heavy damage when throwing explosive javelins at enemies.

Players will also be able to craft weapons and armor to strengthen them in various ways by unlocking new perks, increasing the number of mod slots, and learning new skills. One of the new abilities is called Resonator Blast, which gives Aloy’s consecutive melee hits accumulated power, which is then placed on an enemy, to be detonated when fired with a projectile. The blog also showcased Aloy’s new travel tools, such as the Pullcaster, a grappling hook, and the Shieldwing glider, a Breath of the Wild-style glider.

The PlayStation blog post showcased new robot-dinosaurs Aloy will take on, new moves and tools to get around some of the challenges, beautiful scenery, and more. Also, the blog post mentions the skills in the Forbidden West tree working in tandem with the outfits. This seems to imply that some abilities are only available when wearing certain clothing and that upgrading the armor will also enhance the effectiveness of its associated ability.

Horizon Forbidden West will be released in February 2022 for PlayStation 5.
