We are brothers! Nick here, a game designer from Grinding Gear Games. We recently launched Delirium, our latest expansion and the Path of Exile challenge. In the Delirium challenge of the league, players encounter glittering lies around the world that, as they approach, unleash a flow of error. The mistake goes on, and if you can't bear it, you'll face some fierce new enemies that leave you richly rewarded once you are given it.
My job at Grinding Gear is usually to take a set of game mechanics and rewards and find out the stories or themes that will bring them together. Delirium has been one of the most exciting projects to work on, because the theme – the unforgettable madness, – opens up so many possibilities.
We've touched on madness a few times throughout history. Characters such as Niko the Mad (if the name didn't provide it) and protagonists in Atlas of Worlds have shown a wide variety of paranoia and delusions. Things like Sword Innsbury Edge play into the game's perception by activating a strange character (such as a dead person who does not appear to be anything, will suddenly disappear … but leave your body on the ground for the same time!). But we have never faced madness at this wide range, and we are very attached to player behavior. We never really used the madness as part of the original gameplay. Usually, just a little taste. We needed to make sure that the league focused on genius set itself apart.
So with Delirium, we've approached this topic in a couple of ways:
The fog
As a visual illustration of the effects of Delirium, the fog flowing just looks beautiful. It makes the world feel like it's changing, and it hides the ground enough that you can be sure that as soon as you see that calf, it blinks out of the dirt or not.
Monsters
Aside from the new monsters that come out as you go through the fog, pre-existing monsters can behave… differently. And by & # 39; be different & # 39 ;, I mean they can tear it in half and come up with a scary organization and attack you, before returning to the body of the first beast. Or maybe you just thought.
The sound
Long ago, you will hear gossip and phrases as you approach and activate the Delirium mechanic. It's amazing. But it's almost as unpleasant as you'll hear later, when Delirium begins to show itself. You can start to hear the words. And what those words mean won't always be helpful … or true. It's up to you, the player, to decide what is really, what's crazy, and what's being caught.
Rewards
Exile & # 39; s passive tree method is famous for its size and complexity. A few years ago we added jewelery, allowing players to customize the tree of their choice. Delirium is adding new jewelry that not only fills the tree's desires, but adds to it. Some of these values even allow you to add extras. And also those can be elastic … You can even say that the options are … complicated.
Of course, the Delirium league was silent in the vacuum. Like all of our reviews, Delirium comes with new capabilities, features, and other enhancements and extras.
Now that Delirium is out, I hope you join us, because it's definitely fun. I know I'm joking, and watching other players react to all the weird signs they'll see and hear!
