We reached a happy fortress with PlayStation 5, as we begin to be introduced by our new controller in its final build of developers who use its unique features in their games. But first, we want all members of the PlayStation community to get a first look at the DualSense ™ wireless controller, and hear our vision of how the new controller will affect your senses as you interact internationally on PS5 games. The features of DualSense, as well as the PS5 & # 39; s tempest 3D AudioTech, will bring a new immersive experience to players.
When the PS4 was introduced in 2013, the DualShock 4 wireless controller received positive feedback from players and developers for being the best PlayStation controller yet, and in announcing advanced features such as the Share button. This brought us to the next question – how do we build upon success?
After careful consideration, we decided to keep most of the actors' preferences with DualShock 4, while adding new functionality and refinement to the build. Based on our discussions with the developers, we have concluded that the concept of touch within the gameplay, such as sound, has not been very focused on many games. We had a great opportunity with the PS5 launch by giving game creators the power to explore how to maximize that immersion experience in our new controller. That's why we have adopted a haptic response, adding a variety of emotions that will be felt when you play, such as a little bit of driving through the mud. We've also included complimentary issues on the L2 and R2 DualSense buttons to truly feel the pain of your actions, such as when you draw a bow to shoot an arrow.
This gave us an exciting challenge to create a new controller that builds the current generation, while taking into account the new features we were adding. For example, with variable characters, we had to consider how elements could interact in Hardware, without giving it a powerful feel. Our design team worked closely with our hardware engineers to identify the most common causes of conflicts and activators. Designers were then able to draw lines of how the controller's exterior would look and feel, with the challenge of making the controller feel smaller than it actually looks. Finally, we changed the angle of trigger manually and did some subtle updates to the trigger. We have also considered ways to maintain the durable battery life of a rechargeable DualSense battery, and reduce the controller's weight as much as new features are added.
Buttons, you'll see that we no longer have the "Share" button as we had with DualShock 4. Don't worry – it won't go away. In fact, we built upon the success of our first share button to introduce the new "Create" button. With Create, we are also pioneering new ways for players to create epic gameplay c ontent to share with the world, or just for fun. We have more details on this feature as we get closer to presenting.
DualSense also adds a built-in microphone array, which will allow players to easily chat with friends without a headset – ideal for jumping into quick conversation. However, if you plan on having a long chat, it's best to have that headache.
Now, let's talk about colors. Traditionally our domain administrators have one color. As you can see, we went a bit differently in this, we decided on a two-dimensional design. In addition, we have changed the position of the light bar that will give it more pop. On DualShock 4, it sat on the top of the controller; it now sits on each side of the touchpad, giving it a larger and larger look.
Overall, we've gone through several ideas and hundreds of mockups over the last few years before settling into this final project. DualSense is tested by many gamers of varying sizes, so that we can reach the level of comfort we've been looking for, with great ergonomics. Our goal with DualSense is to give gamers the feeling of being transported into the game world as soon as they open the box. We want gamers to feel like the controller is an extension of their playing – so much so that they forget it's in their hands!
We are excited to share the final look of the DualSense controller with our fans, and we can't wait for everyone to get their hands on it! I would like to close with a message from SIE President and CEO Jim Ryan to the public:
"DualSense represents a powerful departure from the surrender of our previous controller and captures how powerful we feel about making the old leap with the PS5. To the PlayStation community, I would like to thank you for sharing this exciting journey with us as we look forward to the launch of PS5 in Holiday 2020. We look forward to sharing more details on the PS5, including console design, in the coming months. "- Jim Ryan, President and CEO, Sony Interactive Entertainment
