In the world of video games, in addition to the traps, the “review bombing” or review bombing is one of the great nightmares of the developers. And, as a protest for a decision by the creators or as a complaint to a product that is not entirely satisfactory, users score to make the average score of a game go down. Sometimes not limited to a simple scare, but on more than one occasion these scores they get to touch the lowest notes.
Among the most recent and well-known cases, we find imposing names like Death Stranding, Astral chain or even, Pokémon Sword and Shield. But in the last known case, the ‘review bombing’ has been more intense and, above all, curious. Why? Because a single user has managed to show how easy it is to lower the average grades in Metacritic taking as a victim the independent title Kunai.
Kunai is an independent metroidvania-style title that has been developed by the TurtleBlaze team. Since its premiere on February 6, This title has got positive opinions. But everything changed this February 17, at which time the creators were surprised to see that Metacritic lowered its average score from 81 to 17 in the user note section. Such a sharp change in the note that the study did not hesitate to investigate it until it came to the fact that it was a bombardment of reviews.
But the story does not end there, but the developer was that this movement was not caused as a complaint by the community of players, but was a single user who told how he had done this whole process in Reddit, even when the message was deleted shortly after. As it did? As the programmer explains Benjamin de Jager From TurtleBlaze, this author created up to 200 Metacritic accounts with different emails to give a score of 0 to the game. And, as I mentioned, it is not necessary to write a message, so it is quite simple to perform this process.
Of course, many users point out that Metacritic has to have some kind of security. But the reality is that the platform only has a measure against bots that does not prevent a person from being able to create different accounts from the same IP. And, if you think the story ends here, nothing is further from reality. This same user who has sunk Kunai's notes, did the same process in his day with Insurgency: Sandstorm, although none with a hidden motive, but it was totally random.
