Fallout 76 players are about to venture into new territory. This September, the Expeditions update takes players to a perilous place outside the wild reaches of Appalachia: The Pitt!
Built on what remains of prewar Pittsburgh, The Pitt is a tough place. The local Union faction is beset from all sides as bloodthirsty Raiders and once-human Trog beasts close in, so grab your friends, pack your best gear and gear up… it’s time to go on an expedition.
Gear up and go
“Expedition Missions are randomized, repeatable story-based missions on the scale of our most epic end-of-line quests, such as the Vault 79 raid at the end of Wastelanders,” says in-game designer Steve Massey. Fallout 76’s Expedition Leader. “We’ve developed a new quest mod system that allows us to easily randomize and redefine quest objectives to make each part of a mission truly unique and seamlessly blend into the overall story. of the assignment.”
Players can tackle missions solo or in groups of up to four, either with friends or using the new Expedition Public Teams feature included in the update. Players can earn a unique item blueprint once a week at the end of an expedition, as well as collect stamps to claim specific items from the reward pool. Players can also earn repeatable rewards including Legendary Items, Certificates, Cash Notes, and even a brand new way to get Legendary Mods.
Back to the Pitt
Of course, expeditions are not limited to valuable loot. Expeditions allows Fallout fans to visit The Pitt for the first time since 2009’s add-on DLC for Fallout 3. With Fallout 76 set before the events of Fallout 3, Expeditions both offers exciting replayable missions, but also gives players a chance to really explore Pittsburgh in a fascinating era of Fallout history, see the city in a new light… and preview its coming darkness.
“The team was passionate about allowing players to explore other parts of the Fallout universe outside of Appalachia during this unique time period, just a few decades after the Great War,” Massey continues. “The Pitt was an obvious choice for the first town to visit, because in Fallout 3 it was such a dark and unforgiving landscape that you wonder, ‘How did things get so bad?’.” Going forward, the Expeditions format will also give us the ability to take players to all-new locations in the Fallout universe that no existing game has touched on before.
Go alone or as a team – just be prepared
Although any player can sign up for a solo or group expedition, be warned: it can get dangerous. It’s suggested that you first reach level 50 or higher for the best experience of entering The Pitt, with greater challenges awaiting solo Expeditionaries than those who bring a few friends.
“Much like other high-level story-based quests in the game, Expedition Missions have been tuned to be satisfying – but not overly punitive,” Massey says. “Players should come well equipped, but all enemies drop relevant ammo and Stimpaks to help them continue down the field.” Want to play with someone on a different level? Nothing to fear: Like other content in the game, the enemies during the expeditions evolve according to the level of the player. “A low-level player can accompany a high-level friend on a mission and both will experience an appropriate level of difficulty,” Massey assures.
New Player Improvements
Speaking of new players, the Expedition update also includes other game improvements such as adjusted starting gear and other additions benefiting the fresh-faced Vault dwellers just released in Appalachia.
“The Whitespring Resort has been completely revamped into a player center called Whitespring Refuge,” says Massey. “Players will participate in daily Refuge quests, experience an all-new random encounter system, and repair/buy/craft almost anything they want in-game in the lower area of Whitespring Mall. Additionally, the update comes with a ton of frequently requested quality of life changes, including the ability to fast travel directly inside frequently visited locations like The Whitespring and The Rusty Pick without spending money.
