Bad news for fans of ‘Kimi no Na wa.’ (‘Your Name’). Director Lee Isaac Chung dropped the live-action adaptation of Makoto Shinkai’s play.
According to information provided by Deadline, the director of the 6-time Academy Award nominee ‘Minare’ has officially withdrew from production due to conflicts with his schedule.
Although the statement does not delve into what is keeping Chung busy, what is certain is that from this moment Paramount is in search of the next person who will take the reins.
Although the studio has already extended the invitation, so far the candidates who are in the sights of both Paramount and Bad Robot, JJ Abrams’ studio, are unknown.
Abrams, along with Lindsey Weber, will serve as producers, accompanied by the original animated film’s producer, Genki Kawamura, to provide fans with the secur ity they need to see the adaptation.
Because Hollywood taking animated projects often ends up in a terrible mistake that future generations will remember, it doesn’t hurt that the original team joins the mix.
As for Shinkai, he previously commented “When a work of this type is infused with Hollywood cinematography, we may see new possibilities that we were completely unaware of,” eagerly looking forward to seeing the live action film in the future, but without contributing his supervision.
A little more Kimi no Na wa.
For his part, ‘Kimi no Na wa.’ It was released in theaters in Japan in the summer of 2016, causing quite a stir for both locals and those exposed in the West to Shinkai’s highest-grossing film.
With a love story where space and time unfolds for two teenagers living in distant parts of Japan, the audience was trapped to the point of becoming one of the 10 highest-grossing films globally.
Now that Lee Isaac Chung won’t be in the director’s chair, who do you see in the booth for the live action of ‘Kimi no Na wa.’? Tell us in the comments.
