Every city has this story.
A campsite where people mysteriously disappear. A bridge that’s always cold, even in summer. Wood where a deranged killer still wanders on the trail. In Camena – a community in northern Oregon – this story is about a WWII submarine and a collection of lost and terrifying spirits.
Salvation! I’m Adam, Co-Founder of Night School Studio and Lead Writer of Oxenfree. I’m also the co-writer of Oxenfree II: Lost Signals, which I’m very happy to finally announce will arrive on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 by popular demand. I’m happy to finally be able to start sharing some details of the next chapter in the Oxenfree world, this spooky universe filled with weird appearances and floating triangles and women with interesting hair choices.
Previously…
In Oxenfree (2016), a high school student named Alex, her half-brother Jonas, and a few of their friends unwittingly discover that the Camena town legend is very real. Planning to celebrate the end of the school year with a night on Edwards Island – once a military base, now a tourist hotspot – they accidentally ‘tune in’ to a ghostly signal, opening a dimensional rift between time . The rift allows a horde of vengeful ghosts to enter our reality, who hope to make teenage lives their own. Stuck off with no possibility of contacting anyone for help, Alex is forced to fend off the ghosts, reveal the true story of the mysterious island, and come to terms with her own guilt over her brother’s death. , Michael, a year earlier. Happy ending, right?
CORN! Turns out there is more to the story …
Who is Riley?
In Oxenfree II: Lost Signals, you play as Riley Poverly. If you’ve watched our trailer, it’s her with the flashlight, running in that sleek yellow vest. In Oxenfree, our characters were just graduating from high school and entering that time in their lives where they decide who they really want to be. Riley had this moment a long time ago and is now grappling with the repercussions of post-adolescence. Were the choices she made the right ones for her? Is she really who she wants to be?
Born and raised in Camena to a veteran father and absent mother, Riley moved at the earliest opportunity, bouncing between cities and jobs in an attempt to give her life a direction. Today, a recent change has prompted her to return to her former hometown, to take an entry-level job as an environmental researcher.
The mysteries of Camena
You see, the past two months have been strange for Camena. Abnormal electromagnetic waves interfered with electrical and radio equipment around the small coastal town. The televisions turned on and off. The planes have lost radar. Stations cannot transmit their signals statically. A research group from a nearby college has been hired to study the phenomena and trace the source of what is causing the interference. Riley’s job, as a newly hired new research assistant, is to do the heavy lifting: setting up radio transmitters in prescribed areas and reporting the data those transmitters collect. Easy!
Up to… well… things are starting to go… weird.
Stay tuned
In Oxenfree II, you’ll be using much of the same tools as the original Oxenfree, a storytelling game that revolves around a robust conversation system and a radio that picks up supernatural signals.
I wish I could get into more of the history of the game, the characters and the villains and what happens if you go to the old mining town, Garland, and I want to show you all the weird time travel stuff and what what are the tears of time but the rest of the team is pulling me away from the keyboard now.
Thanks for reading!
