New promo art for God of War Ragnarok from the pages of PlayStation’s Arabia teases the fight Kratos and Atreus have over Freya.
Big things seem to be waiting for Kratos and Atreus in God of War Ragnarok, one of the biggest being the pair’s inevitable confrontation with the god of thunder himself, Thor. However, father and son will find themselves facing danger from all sides as Asgardian forces take over Midgard in an attempt to stop the coming apocalypse. The most personal confrontation, however, will be Freya’s, and players have teased this fight in new promotional artwork.
God of War Ragnarok is the sequel to 2018’s God of War, picking up three years after Kratos and Atreus’ journey to Jotenheim and the battles with Baldur that ultimately killed him. The pair will embark on a quest to prevent Ragnarok from happening, with the help of the Old Norse god of war Tyr, as well as trying to discover more about Atreus’ role as Loki to the giants. Standing in the pair’s way will be Thor, whose appearance was teased in Atreus’s vision at the end of the 2018 game, and Freya, his former ally who seeks to avenge Baldur’s death.
With an official release date of November 9, 2022, Sony is starting to release the promotional material to help build hype for Kratos and Atreus’ next adventure. Twitter user Nibel drew attention to one piece of promotional art, in particular, originally posted on PlayStation’s official Arabian Instagram page. The part features a vengeful Freya, sword in hand, attacking her father and son as they traverse the desert on her sled.

As mentioned above, Freya is on a path of revenge after Kratos was forced to kill her son Baldur at the climax of 2018’s God of War. The first hints of this were given to players immediately after the ending. from the previous game, with some character interactions provoking Freya’s ire and her preparations to fight the Ghost of Sparta. One of the more sinister warnings came from Mimir who, after the Valkyrie quest and the revelation that Freya was the former Valkyrie queen, says that the god Vanir is looking for her Valkyrie wings which were taken and hidden by Odin.
However, it seems that this is just the tip of the iceberg, as Kratos and Atreus will encounter many adversaries in their quest to stop Ragnarok. Thor seems to be bringing the full might of Asgard down on the two of them, and given how violent and destructive the 2018 game made fun of him, Kratos may be ready for the fight of his life. Sony Santa Monica also teased a giant wolf, suspected to be Fenrir, in the latest trailer, which only raised more questions among gamers, and only time will tell if he will be friend or foe.
God of War Ragnarok is scheduled to release on November 9, 2022 on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
