Before 2022 rolls around, now is the perfect time to reflect on the 2021 gaming year for PlayStation gamers. The Playstation Blog asked fans to vote for the Game of the Year (GOTY) for PS4 and PS5, and the results are here, highlighting two very strong games from this year.
This year saw the release of many long-awaited games, as well as many that took gamers by surprise. Games like Resident Evil: Village and Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart were polished entries in two treasured video game franchises, while titles like The Game Awards winner GOTY It Takes Two and Deathloop provided players with new characters and new experiences unlike of many games. before had. Usually PlayStation Studios publishes a handful of titles that are in the GOTY discussion, but the discussion gets interesting when the focus group is only titles that came out on PlayStation. In last year’s PlayStation blog vote, The Last of Us: Part 2 won GOTY.
The results of the PlayStation Blog voting for 2021 are available, with Resident Evil: Village and Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart winning PS4 and PS5 GOTY respectively. As in years past, PlayStation Blog shows the ranking of each category through its Trophies, with Platinum being the highest, followed by Gold, Silver and then Bronze.
In addition to being the PS4 GOTY, Village also received the Platinum Trophy award in the categories of Best Story and Best New Character, the latter for the iconic Lady Dimitrescu. However, Rift Apart was this year’s big winner, bringing home the most trophies with platinum awards for Best Art Direction, Best DualSense Use, and Best Graphic Display, in addition to PS5 Game of the Year.

Other notable wins include Kena: Bridge of Spirits as indie game of the year, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy with best soundtrack, and It Takes Two as best multiplayer experience.
Interestingly, this year’s other big PlayStation exclusive, Deathloop, didn’t make the top 4 of any voting category, despite its rave reviews from critics and gamers. It’s also worth noting that Resident Evil: Village also got the gold trophy in the PS5 GOTY vote.
Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, and Resident Evil: Village taking home the most prizes isn’t the biggest surprise. Both games were adored by players and critics, each with a massive player base and making sizable waves upon launch. The only PlayStation Studios game to finish in the top 4 for PS5 GOTY was Returnal, a huge win for the Housemarque team and their challenging gameplay. With Insomniac winning Studio of the Year, the question remains how it continues to deliver hit after hit for PlayStation.
