Sony becomes the first company to have collectively sold more than 500 million units of its consoles.
Sony recently announced updated sales figures for the PS5, confirming that the console had shipped 38.4 million units worldwide as of March 31. It was a significant update, mainly because the company revealed that it had shipped 6.3 million units of the console in January. March quarter, which is the most shipments a console has ever seen in the first quarter of a year. On top of that, the updated numbers for the PS5 also represent a major milestone for PlayStation as a whole.
The PlayStation consoles together have sold more than 500 million units worldwide to date (504.19 million, to be precise), with the PS1 at 102.49 million, the PS2 at 158.7 million, the PS3 at 87.4 million, the PS4 at 117.2 million and the PS5 of course at 38.4 million as of now.
Sony also becomes the first company to cross the 500 million unit milestone, with Nintendo consoles currently totaling over 403 million units. Of course, the portable platforms of neither company are included in these totals.
Xbox is another story, as Microsoft hasn’t provided official sales figures for its consoles for quite some time. Exact worldwide sales figures aren’t available for Xbox One or Xbox Series X/S, though if we were to go by estimates, that would still put collective Xbox sales behind Nintendo and Sony by a pretty wide margin, in approximately 177 million units worldwide to date.
As for the PS5, Sony clearly has no intention of slowing down the console’s momentum. By contrast, the company is aiming to ship 25 million units in fiscal 2023/24, which is more than any console has shipped in a single fiscal year to date.
