In Colombia—and other countries in our region—it is common to find PlayStation 5 consoles from Japan at a more competitive price than the official one. So the news of an arrest of 11 people in Japan for purchasing nearly 2,000 consoles does not cease to resonate with our reality.
The information comes from the newspaper Sankei Shimbun and news website Kobe Shimbun NEXT. These media reported that on January 19, 11 people were arrested. The arrest was carried out by the joint forces of the Cyber Investigation Division of the Hyogo Prefectural Police and the Gunma Prefectural Police. The detainees were deprived of their liberty for the alleged fraudulent activity of creating false accounts to purchase 2,000 units of an unspecified video game console and resell them.
According to investigations, the 11 people arrested – including a high school student and a company executive – bought at least 2,000 units of video game consoles last October, for an estimated amount of 85 million yen. This is approximately $2,269,000,000 Colombian pesos (COP). Typically, an individual in Japan can only purchase a limited number of video game consoles, to prevent them from being resold.
It is still uncertain, for the authorities of the country of the rising sun, the purpose for which these people created the accounts and purchased the product. Additionally, according to media reports, the authorities are investigating the origin of the funds used to acquire said consoles.
