Despite having been “redeemed” with the excellent expansion of The final formthe study behind Destiny 2 continues to walk a dark path. Bungie announced a new round of layoffs in which it will eliminate the roles of more than 200 employees. This represents approximately 17% of its total workforce.

This joins the terrible wave of layoffs in the industry that began in 2023 and which has already claimed around 12,000 jobs so far in 2024.

The announcement was made through a statement posted on the company’s official website. This one is signed by Pete Parsons, current CEO of Bungie. In it he blames “the increase in the cost of video game development, changes in the industry and current economic conditions.”

Explaining the situation in depth, the CEO says Bungie was too ambitious in expanding and starting several projects that became unviable when the economy began to grow more slowly in 2023. That was on top of the “quality failure” that was the Beyond Light expansion. Later in the same statement, Parsons says Bungie will further integrate with Sony and this will bring 155 jobs together with those at SIE. He says that by doing this they tried to save as many jobs as possible.

None of this will be much consolation to the more than 200 people who have lost their jobs in this latest round of layoffs at Bungie. We wish them much success in their future and hope they find new, better-paying positions quickly.
