August 30, 2024 Street Fighter turns 37 and with almost four decades, the longest-running characters in the Capcom franchise have become icons of popular culture. To celebrate the success of the franchise, Capcom has begun building a series of statues in the hometown of Kenzo Tsujimoto, the company’s founder and president.
This statue was built thanks to the donation of about 5.5 million yen (approximately 170 million Colombian pesos) in donations for its creation. According to the city websiteChun Li’s statue was installed in front of Kashihara City Hall, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the educational short film Street Fighter II Yomigaeru Fujiwara-Kyou – Toki wo Kaketa Fighter-tachi.

Street Fighter II: Return to the Fujiwara Capital —as its name would be in Spanish— is an ‘anime’ short film that debuted in 1995 that highlights the ancient capital of Japan, Kashihara. The film features Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li and E. Honda traveling back in time to the city without engaging in combat. This short film was not distributed outside of Japan. However, some fans have uploaded it to YouTube with English and Spanish subtitles.
In 2022, Kashihara and Capcom signed an agreement to use some of the characters from Street Fighter to promote the area and encourage tourism. As part of this agreement, a golden statue of Ryu will also be built. Additionally, other statues of Street Fighter of the characters Ken and E. Honda as well as some manhole covers with motifs from the legendary Capcom fighting game franchise.

At the moment, Street Fighter 6 is the game that demands all of Capcom’s efforts for the genre. As a sign of the developer’s interest, the competitive circuit—Capcom Pro Tour—has expanded to the entire world. This is thanks to online events and its prize is the largest among all games of the same genre.
