Initial sales of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy disappointed Square Enix, but they’re getting better

One of the great surprises of the year 2021 was the new video game starring the Guardians of the Galaxy. No one was betting a peso on this title, but it had very good reviews —including ours and the one from sister site TribuGamer— and won several GOTY awards. Through its financial report for the last quarter of 2021, Square Enix revealed that sales of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy they were not very good. Yosuke Matsuda, the company’s president, said: “Despite good reviews, the game’s sales at launch were below our initial expectations.”

Part of the blame for this may be due to the poor reception of the previous Marvel game released by Square Enix. Marvel’s Avengers has been the subject of constant criticism from the gaming community for a wide variety of reasons, including technical issues and its focus on microtransactions. This may have made players think that Star-Lord and company’s game was just more of the same. They were wrong.

But it’s not all bad news. Matsuda added that the game’s sales have increased since the end of last year and that he hopes they will continue to make up for its poor start.
