Kunio-kun’s next game would go to the Three Kingdoms of China

China, game, kingdoms, Kuniokuns

Arc System Works, current owner of the license created by Technos Japan, presented a first preview of the next project in the saga Kunio-kun, taking advantage of its 35th anniversary. The details are not significantly clear but an important departure from the traditional IP of Kunio-kun O River City.

Kunio-kun no Sangokushi dayo: Zeiin Shuugou! is in development by APlus Games to celebrate these 35 years. At the moment there are no designated platforms but a theme located in the historical period of the Three Kingdoms is distinguished (Sanggu) in China. How will this more serious setting adapt to the city mafias that characterize the series? We have no idea.

The closest thing about it had been River City: Knights of Justice for 3DS, distributed by Natsume in the West. We do not know if the next Kunio-kun keep the ‘super deformed’ aesthetic of its predecessors or go for a more realistic style. Most likely it is.

A little further back, for the Famicom and Game Boy, Japan received Downtown Special: Kunio-kun’s Historical Period Drama! Either way, exponents very different from beat ‘em up of schoolboys and street thugs, whose last original installment was River City Girls hand in hand with WayForward.

For now, distributed by Arc System Works and developed by WayForward, it also comes at the end of the year River City Girls Zero. This is a localized version of Shin Nekketsu Koha: Kunio-tachi no Banka (1994). In 2022, we will be able to enjoy River City Girls 2, the return of Kyoko, Misako, Kunio, Riki, and two more playable guests.
