The ‘battle royale’ genre is having every day more reps beyond already well-known titles Fortnite y Free Firethis time from the franchise of My Hero Academia (Boku no Hero Academia). Is about My Hero Academia: Ultra Rumblea game that was in the closed beta phase these days and that we were able to test for a while, so we can talk about what we thought of these first impressions.
To understand this game, the first thing to say is that we cannot exactly expect a Fortnite or some other similar title. In fact, we are going to see a smaller map with only 24 players that stands out for the combats with the ‘quirks’ or gifts (superpowers) of the characters. Therefore, we are going to see very fast games that are over in a matter of a few minutes, a very attractive element of this title.
The only game mode we have so far is team battles of three members. These can be made up of any combination of the eight available heroes and four villains regardless of their allegiances: Izuku Midoriya, Katsuki Bakugou, Ochako Uraraka, Shoto Todoroki, Tusyu Asui, All Might, Cementos, Mt. Lady, Tomura Shigaraki, Dabi, Himiko Toga and Mr. Compress. They all have three special abilities with charges and cooldowns, as well as standard melee attacks. The skills vary between ranged shooting, displacement, terrain manipulation, etc. The idea, as usual, is to be the last team standing.
So far there is only one map and players can decide where to start on it. These can jump right into the action or search for hidden items inside chests. The objects are health potions or shields, cards to level up some power or powers of other characters that only serve to generate a passive effect.
It has to be said that while you understand how the item system works, handling it is the least engaging part of the game. Basically, items are picked up quickly to go to the inventory, but to activate them you have to do too many steps that waste your time. This is contrary to the frenetic gameplay of the fights, so it is urgent to devise a way to quickly use items and level ups to finish improving the experience.
Beyond that, we have a game that is fast and easy to understand. Not long goes by without facing other teams and the action happens almost continuously. All players can climb and destroy structures, so terrain interaction is part of the experience. You just need to become familiar with the abilities of the character you are using to try to beat the opponents. From what we saw the title has a lot of potential to give its players fun.
Only the aiming system on consoles should be improved, which is completely manual. You can activate the assisted aim option, but you don’t feel any improvement. Working on this specific point will be important to validate the participation of some characters.
In the technical part we can say that the multiplayer is quite fluid. No connection issues felt at all. Despite the chaos with so many abilities passing over time, everything remains stable and enjoyable to play.
Among the reflections that this game lets you try, is that it is very likely that people are only motivated to play if it is with friends
Looking ahead, we can think that the game should add new characters and new maps (or at least make slight changes to this one).
We conclude these first impressions of the beta of My Hero Academia Ultra Rumble feeling this will be a good competitor in the ‘battle royale’ gaming scene. While it will catch the attention of anime fans of My Hero Academia, it is possible that other players will be encouraged to try it too. After all, we are talking about a ‘free-to-play’ game that will allow anyone to try their characters and have fun in the style of these superheroes.
