It was well known that the CMA (UK Competition and Markets Authority) had their eyes on Nintendo and PlayStation for “irregularities” in the way they handled subscription systems like Switch Online and PS Plus. Following an investigation, both companies have agreed to change their practices.
These will be the changes implemented not only for users in the UK or Europe, but all over the world.
Sony has agreed to implement measures that will benefit PlayStation Plus (PS Plus) subscribers. From this moment on, the company will have to contact users who have not used the service for some time to remind them how to cancel the subscription. If they don’t and don’t use it, Sony will stop receiving their automatic payments.
This change comes a few months before PlayStation Plus subscription service receives massive changes that will make it similar to Xbox Game Pass
On Nintendo’s part, the Switch Online service will no longer have automatic subscription renewal as the default option. It can only be activated after the user enters their credentials.
A few months ago it was Microsoft who was under the scrutiny of the CMA. In January 2022 it had to change the way it presents information to Game Pass users
