Since November 2020, the current generation of Sony and Microsoft consoles began. More than three years since then, according to Sony, its PS5 console is already approaching the last stage of its life cycle. This hasty statement comes from Sony senior vice president Naomi Matsuoka. PS5 sales are expected to decline for the next fiscal year, which begins April 24 and runs through March 2025.
According to Sony, 8.2 million PS5s were sold during the third quarter of the current fiscal year, which ended in December 2023. These figures are lower than expected for PlayStation and the company reduced its expectations from 25 million to 21 million consoles for the current fiscal year. Since November 2020, 54.7 million PS5s have been sold and in November 2024 it will barely have been on the market for four years.
The original model has been replaced by a slightly thinner one. But Sony still does not comment on plans for an alleged PS6, which they say are already preparing the first games. Some reports suggest that a “PS5 Pro” is more feasible in the near future. As for the game catalog, the PS5 exclusives are few and only names like Final Fantasy XVI, Spider-Man 2 and soon Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
If we add to this that Sony will not release titles from its franchises (God of War, Horizonetc) during the next fiscal year, the statement that PS5 is entering its final years when a console like PS4 has been active for just over 10 years and counting is uncertain.
