Recently, Sony has released a new version of the PS5 which, surprisingly, comes with a complete redesign of its interior. This may not be too relevant to many, but it is an important change; not only because it makes the console lighter, but also because it impacts its power consumption.
The youtuber Austin Evans He had access to the renewed model, which for now is only available in Australia, and found very interesting news. Since changes in motherboard and the heat sink, down to a slight tweak to the bay to expand storage with an M.2 SSD.
The new model of the PS5 analyzed by the specialist is the CFI-1202B, corresponding to the Digital Edition; that is, the version without a disc reader unit. This has been directly compared to the CFI-1000 versions, the one from the original 2020 release, and CFI-1100, the first revision of the device, which already weighed about 300 grams less than its predecessor.
The second update of the console continues on the same path, being even lighter. It weighs only 3.30 kilograms, against 3.54 kg for the IFC-1100 and 3.81 kg for the IFC-1000. This means that the PS5, at least in its Digital Edition, has lost almost half a kilo compared to the model that Sony introduced to the market at the end of 2020.
But what has also attracted attention during the tests has been the energy consumption. Is that the latest model uses up to nearly 30 watts less when gaming than the IFC-1100 that hit users last year, and about 17 watts less than the original PS5. However, it has not yet been explained how Sony could have achieved this optimization.
The notorious internal changes of the new PS5
Beyond weight and energy management, the most noticeable changes to the new PS5 are inside. The CFI-1202B motherboard, for example, is about two inches smaller than previous versions.. But the most drastic change has been seen again in the cooling system.
The CFI-1100 version that was released in 2021 had already drastically reduced the size of the heat sink, compared to the original model. And this new revision of the equipment brings with it an even smaller one, with part of the most exposed copper tubes.
This is also where an important part of weight loss lies. The motherboard and the cooling system of the new PS5 weigh just 1.11 kilograms, against 1.36 and 1.62 kg of the 2021 and 2020 variants, respectively.
The other striking fact is that Sony has changed the location of the CMOS battery. Before she was away from the heat sink, while now she is under it. A striking decision, since if at any time it must be replaced, the heat sink must be removed to access it.
Lastly, the Japanese have modified the bay to expand storage with an M.2 SSD. Previously the solid state drive rested on a PCB, but now it rests directly on a metal plate. This is due to the reduction in size of the motherboardalthough it is unknown if it is due to costs or heat dissipation.
For now, the new revision of the PS5 is available only in australia. But it would not be surprising if in the coming months it gains a place in other international markets. And since we are talking about the Sony console, let’s not forget that it has suffered a recent increase in its prices in practically the whole world, with the exception of the United States.
