Almost five years ago we found out about the project that Goichi «Suda 51» Suda and Hidetaka «Swery65» Suehiro wanted to work on. It is about Hotel Barcelonahe White Owls game about a serial killer – for a change – in a 2.5D slasher of action and looping platforms, which also parodies movies. Hotel Barcelona was fully unveiled a year ago with the goal of launching in 2024, but will finally launch in early 2025, as confirmed
«I always wanted to make a horror game together with Suda51»Swery65 explains about how this game went from being a horror concept inspired by Twin Peaks y Siren to what it is now. «When we were talking about it, I came up with a very complicated idea for a game. And Suda said, ‘no, no, you should make it simpler.’ “Just make it a game where you go around killing other serial killers.”. Not Suda’s most original proposal, we know.
The game is practically ready for players to step into the shoes of US Marshal Justine and listen to their own inner serial killer, Dr. Carnival, as the best advisor when it comes to dealing with the other serial killers.
“For this particular game, to track down the serial killers, we have to go to seven different worlds, seven different stages.”Swery adds. «And each stage is a parody of a different subgenre of horror. So, for example, the first one is a summer camp horror parody. Next up is a restaurant horror parody. There is also a horror parody of aliens (…) »
The story is very deep and, in fact, is related to the city of Barcelona.
Right now the developers are checking the game for errors, although they prefer to continue polishing and improving it. “But ideally the game will be released in early 2025.”
There will be a simultaneous launch on PC (Steam), Xbox Series X/S and PS5. However, as for Nintendo’s platform, contrary to what everyone believes, there are no plans at the moment, as the Japanese CEO jokingly adds, “in the distant future, maybe the AI will port it to Switch for me.”
