2023 has been a great year for video games. Although at the beginning of the year the optimism regarding seeing big releases was at a standstill, little by little the year began to pick up, until a spectacular mid-year and a closing in style. Outside of triple A, it has also been an exciting vintage, with great releases, especially on PC.
We did not want to make a specific ranking of the best games of 2023, and we have selected those that we believe are the most special of the year, both for how the public liked them and for what they have meant for the respective franchises to which they belong. And if we look back, some of the best games of the year are direct sequels (or remakes) of games that, in their day, were already an absolute success in all aspects.
This year, all platforms have launched some titles that have redefined their own categories and that is why we wanted to choose one of the great representatives of each genre and each platform:
The best video games of 2023
Baldur’s Gate 3
The RPG of RPGs. The best game of 2023 and one of the best games in the entire history of the genre. Baldur’s Gate 3 improves in everything on each of the deliveries that bear the same name and sets the new bar for what a role-playing game for PC in this new generation has to be. If you have to stick with one of the list, let it be this one. Of course, save some free time, because if you are one of the completists you are going to need to put in many hours.
Spider-Man 2
The continuation of the great PS4 Spider-Man (and Miles Morales) has been one of the surprises of the year on the Sony console. Continuous, but with a good number of improvements in almost all its sections, it has given a twist to the history of the wall-crawler. Perhaps, one of the most spectacular aspects of Spider-Man 2 is, without a doubt, how incredibly good it feels to get around New York City
Tears of the Kingdom
The Zelda sequel on Switch may not have had the same impact as the first game, but that doesn’t mean it’s not one of the best games of the year. A delight not only for Zelda lovers, but also for all those looking for a beautiful open world, in which to get lost for hours without excuses, topped with a narrative and staging that only Nintendo knows how to do, Tears of Kingdom Not only is it one of the best games of 2023, it is also one of those that will occupy the list when we remember to rate the best of the generation.
Resident Evil 4 Remake
Although Capcom already knew how to do this remake after having given a facelift to 2 and 3, the truth is that they have reached their maximum exponent in Resident Evil 4 Reamake. From the graphics to the gameplay, everything is delicious in this game. If it weren’t a remake of an already known story, the truth is that it would be the best game of the year. And also with the launch of its DLC, they have rounded off a story that is already masterful in its entire narrative section. A must for video game lovers.
Alan Wake 2
If there has been a key surprise this 2023 it is Alan Wake 2. A direct sequel to the great launch of the last generation on Xbox that once again redefines not only the franchise that it inaugurated, but also the very essence of the original title. A formula that combines the best of The X-Files, True Detective or The Silence of the Lambs, with an FBI agent involved. We return to the place that made Alan Wake famous in this new action and investigation adventure that exudes brilliance from the first minute.
Final Fantasy XVI
Although in this case it is not a sequel, well yes, in the name, Final Fantasy XVI is one of the best installments of the franchise in recent years and one of the best video games of the year. With a great narrative, which It is reminiscent of Game of Thrones and the best fantasy books in equal parts., the staging of Final Fantasy XVI surprised everyone and everyone. Furthermore, the changes to the combat system, which were great, along with the brutal boss battles, seasoned with an outstanding soundtrack, make this Square Enix installment the best of the year.
