It started as a game mode to part II. Then it became a game entirely apart from Ellie’s adventure. Now an announcement from Naughty Dog that it has been postponed casts doubts about the future of the long-awaited multiplayer game of The Last of Us.
Through a social media postNaughty Dog announced to fans of the franchise that “they realized that the best thing for this game is to give it more time”.
The statement goes on to clarify that the studio is still working on this project and a new single player title. So it hasn’t been cancelled.
In a report published in Bloomberg, journalist Jason Schreier sheds more light on the situation. He says that Sony was not satisfied with the form that the multiplayer game of The Last of Us and that is why he decided that it should be postponed while “they reevaluated the direction of this title”.
The fault is Destiny 2
The report elaborates by saying that Sony asked Bungie to evaluate all “games-as-a-service” in development. They —with the expertise that supposedly gives them work in Destiny 2— concluded that the multiplayer of The Last of Us did not have enough items to keep players engaged for a long period of time. This leads us to wonder if it is really necessary that all multiplayer titles today have to be ‘live-services’.
We don’t know if the other “single player” game is a third of TLOU or the rumored continuation of the saga Uncharted. It could also be a completely new IP.
