Sony has listened to the public and finally has endowed al PlayStation Portal with the most requested feature: play PS5 titles directly from the cloud. The Japanese have released a software update for their remote player that incorporates the option to access more than 120 games through the Cloud Streaming of PlayStation Plus.
Without a doubt, this is welcome news for users, since this function expands the possibilities of the PlayStation Portal. The biggest criticism against the device was for its limited capabilities that only allowed you to play locally installed video games on the PS5, as long as the console was turned on.
With the addition of streaming PS5 games from the cloud, the PlayStation Portal is given a little more versatility. With this addition, players can access the catalog of compatible titles from Sony’s servers. This means that it is possible to play from the cloud even if you don’t have a PlayStation 5 at your disposal.
A still experimental function
Unfortunately, history is not without some buts that cannot be ignored. The first thing we must highlight is that Cloud Streaming for the PlayStation Portal is available as a beta and that, for now, it is about an experimental feature. This means that it may have bugs or not work correctly until the final version is released.
The second point to consider is that PS5 game streaming from the cloud will only be offered in the countries in which the PlayStation Plus Premium plan is offered. Therefore, initially it is only accessible in 30 markets, including Spain.
Other issues to consider:
- Cloud Streaming only allows access to games from the PlayStation Plus Premium catalog. Sony has not yet enabled the use of the PlayStation Portal to play those PS5 titles purchased from the PlayStation Store from the cloud.
- PS4 and PS3 games are not supported on the PlayStation Portal via Cloud Streaming.
- The option to play from the cloud is not available on child accounts. Additionally, there is no support for certain features such as microtransactions and 3D Audio.
How to activate Cloud Streaming on the PlayStation Portal
If you have a PlayStation Portal and want to play PS5 titles from the cloud, you need a PSN account and an active PlayStation Plus Premium subscription. Once you have updated the device software to the latest version, you should go to the Quick Menu and enter Settings. In this section you will find the section Cloud Gaming (Beta) and when accessing it you will have to activate it manually.
When you have completed those simple steps, you are ready to start playing. Please note that quick access to PS5 game streaming will be added to the PlayStation Portal home screen.
According to Sony, the PlayStation Plus Premium catalog provides access to more than 120 PS5 games directly from its servers. Among them stand out Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart y Ghost of Tsushima. The Cloud Streaming beta allows you to play a maximum resolution of 1080p, at 60 frames per second. Of course, you must make sure you have a WiFi connection of at least 13 Mbps to guarantee this quality.
By playing from the cloud with the PlayStation Portal you will be able save your progress in the cloud and it will automatically sync with your PS5, so you can resume your game locally from the console. For this you will have up to 100 GB of space. Additionally, Cloud Streaming will support all DualSense controller sensors and controls, as long as they are integrated into the original game.
