We explain the mechanics of Natlan’s phlogiston and noctambulism

Whenever a new region comes to the game we’re in for some gameplay surprises, but the new systems implemented in the land of the Pyro Archon really change the game quite a bit. With the arrival of Natlan, Genshin Impact introduced the Phlogiston, Night Blessing, and Nightwalking mechanics that are used by characters from the region such as Kachina, Mualani, Kinich, and Xilonen. Let’s explain what they are and how they work.

What is the Night Owl Blessing?

All Natlan characters coming to Genshin Impact will have a status called Night Owl Blessing which increases its mobility around the world. China has its turbo spinner to climb easily, Mualani You can surf on land and water with your shark surf board and Kinich uses his grappling hook to launch himself into the air. All of the following Natlan characters will have similar movement abilities.

These motion effects can be activated by switching characters even in circumstances where you wouldn’t normally be able to switch. You can switch to Kachina while climbing, Kinich while in the air, and Mualani while swimming and they will immediately be in their Night Owl Blessing state. This system is called Nocturnal transmission.

When a character is in the state of Night Owl Blessing, a night owl meter next to it that indicates how long the effects will last.

If you're confused about the concepts of Nocturnism, Phlogiston, and Natlan's Night Owl Blessing in Genshin Impact, here's an explanation.

When the meter reaches zero, the effect of the Night Owl Blessing will disappear… unless we have accumulated phlogiston.

What is Phlogiston in Genshin Impact and how does it work?

Phlogiston —named after Johann Becher’s obsolete flammability theory— is a type of energy related to the Pyro element that is active only in Natlan. When we are in this region, we will have an orange phlogiston meter on our character’s health bar.

This phlogiston will only appear while we are in Natlan and will be shared by all team members. If a Natlan character such as Kachina, Mualani, Kinich, or Xilonen depletes their Night Owl meter, they will begin expending phlogiston to remain in the Night Owl Blessing state..

How to recover phlogiston

  • Travel to a fast travel point or Statue of the Seven.
  • Activating the points where there are Seeds of Eternal Fire.
  • Picking up Phlogiston seeds
  • Collecting objects from nature such as Umbrella arrows, Flamigranadas, Armored beetles y Pyro Crystalloptera.
  • Destroying rock pillar and phlogiston barrels.

Night Explosion

The last mechanic related to the night owl and phlogiston in Genshin Impact is the nocturnal explosionIf we have a Natlan character in the team (with a certain level), this system will be activated when we cause elemental damage to an enemy in battle. Each character will receive a different effect:

  • China gains 20% Geo Damage Bonus for 12s.
  • Mualani gains 1 charge of “Tide Lore” that lasts for 20 sec and can stack up to 3 times. When using Aquablast Missiles, Mualani consumes all Tide Lore charges, causing the damage of the skill to increase by the number of charges consumed, equal to 20/30/40% of his Max Health.
  • Kinich Gains 1 charge of “Hunter’s Expertise” that lasts for 15 sec and can stack up to 2 times. When Kinich uses the Scale-Piercing Cannon in Airborne Hunt: Airborne Pursuit, all Hunter’s Expertise charges will be consumed and the damage dealt by the Hunter’s Expertise will be increased by 320% of Kinich’s ATK for each charge consumed.

Other Natlan characters that arrive Genshin Impact in the future they will get different effects.
