Hideki Kamiya has posted an entry in the official PlayStation blog to talk about Sol Cresta, the shoot ’em up that is part of his collection of neoclassicals. In addition, they have shared a new gameplay trailer where we learn about the “dock-and-split” mechanics and Formations.
Both will be key to the title since this Cresta is basically a continuation of Moon Cresta and Terra Cresta, two arcade titles from the 80s where technology was not so bad. That is why this new Sol Cresta will offer the same gameplay but with more modern touches, starting with the possibility of separating parts of the ship.
Formations and uses
The Yamato, which is the name of the ship, is divided into three units: Amaterasu, Tsukoyomi and Susano. Each one has its respective possibilities and rearranging the place where they are located changes the abilities that we can use on the ship. The idea of the formations is to only use a specific unit of the ship for each moment.
Amaterasu has a triple laser if it is in front of the ship and an Ultra Laser if you place it in the middle of the ship. Tsukoyomi fires missiles and electrifies them if you place her in front of the ship, while if you put her a little further back she will fire more missiles. Finally, Susano can be located in three places and in all of them he will use drills that we can shoot. Your power will be higher the further back you are on the ship.
Lastly, there are the formations. The Delta lets you fire a lot of small projectiles at many places on the screen, but they are not very powerful. The Moon fires more powerful projectiles but only left and right, while Afterbuner is the most powerful but makes aiming difficult.
Platinum promised to reveal more builds and mechanics soon, so secrets are still lacking. Sol Cresta will arrive in 2021 on PlayStation 4, Switch and PC.
