Do we have a definitive name for the next Sonic game in 2022?
In the last few hours it has been made public that SEGA has recently registered the trademark ‘Sonic Frontiers’ in Japan, which has sparked speculation on the networks as to whether this is the final name for the new hedgehog game for 2022. The bulk of the leak is that Sonic Frontiers’ name exactly matches that of a possible Leaked to Reddit during the last month of October, which also ensured that the game would be an open world, Zelda Breath of the Wild style.
The existence of a new Sonic game for 2022 is official; the Japanese company announced it last May with a little teaser, but did not reveal a definitive name or significant details of the game. What SEGA has announced are the platforms it will reach (including Nintendo Switch): PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X / S, Xbox One, Switch and PC. The initial name that was taken from May’s teaser metadata was Sonic Rangers, but it appears that was just a name for internal use and not the last one, which could be Sonic Frontiers.
The Sonic team makes sure they are committed to do something very special for the 30th anniversary of the blue hedgehog and that the new 2022 game will represent a “breakthrough” in the series, according to studio director Takashi Iizuka. The creator said this year that he intends the new title to have the same impact and influence as Sonic Adventure in its day, and to lay the groundwork for future games for the SEGA mascot.
