Sony’s latest financial report indicates a notable drop in the number of PlayStation Plus subscribers, although executives remain optimistic.
While PlayStation Plus has been around much longer than Game Pass, each is still the other’s main rival. Like Game Pass, Sony’s service is a paid subscription that gives customers a selection of free games every month. It also gives subscribers early access to upcoming PlayStation titles and discounts on regular PlayStation Store purchases.
However, PlayStation Plus might be having some issues. According to a recent report, Sony is struggling to retain PS Plus subscribers, and memberships have noticeably dropped in recent months. However, Sony executives say they are not worried about the report.
According to the latest financial report from PlayStation 5 maker Sony, PS Plus lost around 600,000 subscribers between December 2021 and March 2022. While that may not sound like much compared to the remaining 47.4 million PS subscribers. Plus, it’s still a noticeable drop in number. Membership This is reportedly only the second time PS Plus has seen a drop in membership in the last eight years. In addition, the service also saw a decline in active users, defined as the total expected number of unique accounts that have played or logged into the PlayStation Network. Sony has reportedly lost around 5.9 million active users since March 2020.
So even though PlayStation Plus is barely going through a crisis, the drop is still significant. Still, PlayStation CFO Hikori Totoki didn’t seem concerned when he recently spoke with a reporter from the Toisthe news website. According to Totoki, although demand has fallen since 2020, PS Plus has seen high levels of engagement from remaining subscribers. He also expressed the opinion that the service will recover its subscribers over time, describing the drop as a “transient issue.” He is also optimistic that PS Plus can maintain its high levels of participation.
Furthermore, Totoki added that Sony expects an increase in the number of users following the planned redesign of the subscription service. Sony announced the redesign of PS Plus in March, although the rumors go back a long way. It’s also moving to a three-tier model, with Essential, Extra, and Premium tiers. Sony plans to introduce the changes this summer and hopefully it will be better received than Sony’s redesigned PlayStation Store in 2020.
In the meantime, PlayStation Plus still has a lot to offer its members. Next month’s games include titles like Hood: Outlaws and Legends and Slay the Spire. It’s also not too late to claim the hit JRPG Persona 5 before it leaves the PS Plus collection tomorrow. Subscribers can also get FIFA 22, Tribes of Midgard, and Curse of the Dead Gods as their free games for May.
