Hi! I am Matt Nava, creative director at Giant Squid. In recent years, we have been working on our latest game, Sword of the Sea. During the state of play today, we revealed our release date of August 19, 2025. I am delighted to finally share more with you on the world and the gameplay of this atmospheric surf adventure.
An exhilarating and high speed way to explore
Like our previous titles Abzu and The Pathless, this game focuses on a unique and engaging movement. Basically, Sword of the Sea is a matter of surfing. You will make your way through mysterious mobile sand waves on the old and powerful borehole. We have built this game with a speed and maneuverability in mind – you will catch the air of the statues of fallen, crushing the chains of the archaic machines and making tips in tombs in the shape of a half -tuileau while you join the Wraith in his quest to bring life back to his sterile world. And of course, there are a lot of intuitive but satisfactory tips you can do to show your skills as you go.
In Sword of the Sea, the movement itself is a joy. Inspired by classic skating and snowboard games of the past and fusion with our environmental design and our atmospheric narrative style has led to a mythical surf adventure unlike something else.
Reveal the sea
While the Wraith travels through the desolate necropolis, you will explore Skatepark type ruins full of ramps, wall walks and secrets. Discover the mysteries of this earth and you can revive the magical life that once lived in the waves. Transform the sandy dunes into an emerald oceans, and the forgotten temples will come to life with fish and beautiful Varech forests, allowing you to reach new peaks when you slide up through the leaves.
Fish schools will flow with restored waters, allowing you to sail quickly alongside or look with wonder that they merge into giant whirling bait balls. You could also get a boost from a giant jellyfish and bounce up or find larger creatures like Orca or Dolphins that follow you during your travels or even allow you to reach a journey!
A mysterious and visually magnificent world
The giant calmar games are known for their unique and instantly recognizable art style that creates memorable and magnificent worlds for the players to get lost. Sword of the SEA is no different and we think it is coming to be our best work to date. You will find yourself slowing down from these high speed speeds just to take everything.
Although the undulating and changing sands can be what you have seen the most so far, the history of the Wraith will take him to many regions beyond the desert. Prepare to surf the snow fields swept by the wind, the glacial mountains and many other exciting and unexpected biomes in this adventure.
With the power of the PS5 and the PS5 Pro, we can deliver the most amazing views and impressive places without sacrificing the performance required for high -speed and devil gameplay at the heart of Sword of the Sea.
A spiritual journey
In Sword of the Sea, surfing through the landscape can really evoke a state of meditative and flow calm. As a surfer and snowboarder myself, I felt the rush towards movement and given the beauty of nature in a way that only these extreme sports can offer. But there is more than this simple surfing is a spiritual experience, which I hope to capture with this game. At a certain level, the history of the Wraith concerns the continuation of this feeling of total connection to nature that the only surfing can give you. When you can finally play Sword of the Sea, admire the vibrant color, the living world and the enchanting partition of Austin Wintory – we hope that experience will give you the indescribable spiritual combination of rush and tranquility that makes surfing so special.

Sword of the Sea will be available on PlayStation Plus from the launch on August 19 for PS5 and we can't wait for you to get your hands on it and start your surf adventure. Thank you for reading – We will see you on the waves this summer!
