The Coalition, the studio behind the Gears saga since the fourth installment, has shared a couple of demos So let’s see what Unreal Engine 5 is capable of. This is a new graphics engine from Epic Games, a company they have worked with since the beginning of the franchise.
Unreal Engine 4 was around for the entire past generation and now Epic wants everyone to move on to the next version. Only a few studios have had access to the new version of the engine and The Coalition is one of those studios, so they have shown their progress.
Incredible detail
The first video is a male model that is seen in great detail. One of the Epic announcements was that the new engine was going to be able to represent many more polygons on the screen, and they have just taken advantage of that for the character’s face. His model has 130,000, and 30,000 of these are dedicated to his face. Also, hair and beard need 3.5 million triangles.
They have used the same for the other demo, although here they also tried to make lighting play a more decisive role. That is why they represented a kind of rhombus inside a cavern with a sky swallower. In addition, the rhombus has quite striking artificial lights
Bottom line: the demos look great, and while they don’t represent any real project, we hope this experience will lead to a very good one. Especially since The Coalition has already stopped dedicating themselves to the post-launch of Gears 5 to dedicate themselves to a new project without a name.
The only detail that is known is that it will use the Unreal Engine 5, it could be Gears 6 or not. We will have to wait to find out what they have in mind.
