The creator of the SaGa JRPG franchise confirms that more remasters are expected to follow the cross-platform launch of SaGa Frontier.
Thursday marked the release of the highly anticipated SaGa Frontier remaster. Originally released in 1997, SaGa Frontier is a PlayStation JRPG developed by Square long before joining Enix. Now Square Enix has brought SaGa Frontier back with updated HD visuals, improved battle pacing, and an all-new story with a new protagonist. However, Square Enix isn’t settling for remastering SaGa Frontier. The company confirmed today that it is now planning multiple additional remasters for the SaGa franchise.
As part of a live-streamed celebration for the launch of SaGa Frontier, Famitsu was able to confirm with Square Enix’s Akitoshi Kawazu that more SaGa remasters were coming. Kawazu mentions three games specifically. SaGa Frontier 2, the direct sequel to SaGa Frontier, is one of the games. Romancing SaGa, an older JRPG made for the Super Nintendo and from which SaGa Frontier was created, is the second named game. The third is Unlimited SaGa, one of the newer releases in the SaGa franchise, as it was originally released for the PlayStation 2.
Kawazu doesn’t mention any other remasters, but apparently, he did hint at an entirely new SaGa game. Unfortunately, no other details were offered. It has been around five years since the most recent SaGa games were released, being Imperial SaGa for browsers and SaGa: Scarlet Grace on PS Vita. SaGa fans are very likely to love a new SaGa game for major consoles.
However, for the moment, Kawazu was happy with the new SaGa Frontier release. It did not provide timelines or further details on when future SaGa content will be delivered. Suffice it to say, SaGa Frontier is available now and more SaGa will be delivered in the future.
SaGa Frontier is available now on PC, PS4, Switch, and mobile devices.
