Many fans are looking forward to the release of Psychonauts 2, a sequel to the 3D platformer where players wield various psychic powers in surreal mental landscapes. Developer Double Fine Productions provided an update in April that the game is still scheduled for release in 2021.
Psychonauts 2 will pick up where the original Psychonauts game left off when Razputin, also known as Raz, officially joins the Psychonauts. For a while, Double Fine has been working to finalize its development on the sequel. Recently, Game Informer revealed a new video for Psychonauts 2, and the video shows some gameplay for the upcoming 3D platformer.
The video begins by showing a game of Raz’s Psychonauts 2 walking through the Psychonauts headquarters, the Mother Lobe. Inside, Raz and the viewers see the new Psi-Power from Psychonauts 2 called “Mind Connection.” According to the video, Mental Connection is described as a skill that allows players to “connect certain thoughts and form associations.”
With this ability, Raz can connect people’s thoughts, visually appearing as connection points between floating thought bubbles. Along with its story potential, the new Psi-Power can be used as a means of travel and for combat. Raz can be pushed into a thought bubble to connect new thoughts and use them to traverse vertically, opening up new platforming possibilities for players.
In combat, Raz can use the mental connection to attract smaller enemies towards him, be it basic censors or bad ideas. When they get close, players can unleash attacks on enemies. When facing larger enemies like the new Heavy Censors, players can use the Mental Connection to lure them in and use Raz’s psychic powers.
Raz is shown this ability by Hollis Forsythe, the second-in-command of the Psychonauts and Raz’s new psychic instructor. The gameplay video doesn’t spoil much of the game, aside from some quick glances from Hollis, some of Raz’s fellow Psychonaut cadets seen in previous Psychonauts 2 concept art, and the new Mind Connect ability. The video also shows a quick look at Hollis’s mind as a new location, where Raz gets into trouble and must help fight the Censors in his mind.
According to the video, there are still many new psychic powers that will still appear in the game. Players will need to stay updated to see what Psychonauts 2 has in store for them later this year.
Psychonauts 2 will be released on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X / S sometime in 2021.
