Today, I'm happy to let you know that Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series is coming to PlayStation VR soon in the summer, and the series will be available as a complete series: all three episodes and Lightsaber Dojos will be available for purchase together, for the first time.
Back in 2016, when ILMxLAB started talking about creating a canonical VR series centered on Darth Vader, our goal was to share new and unique stories with one of the most respected citizens in the galaxy. We wanted to introduce you to the world of Star Wars in a way that can only be done with the inclusion of immersive content in VR. This can put you in the middle of the action to connect with the amazing characters as your action moves the story forward.
Prior to Vader Immortal, I worked with Lucasfilm Story Group to develop Star Wars stories for feature films. Now, the task has been to bring the same techniques and care we used to our movies to this new way of telling stories. Of course, quality is the key to a product like Star Wars. We forced ourselves daily to combine high-quality visuals, sound effects and compelling in a way that it has never attempted before or accessed in the VR space. To do this, we created a team of people with different backgrounds from film, games, and animation, bringing key collaborators like ClutchPlay, Elemental Epic Games & # 39; Unreal Engine 4. This, with the help of Writer and Executive Producer David S. Goyer, helped find our way of the project.
One of our first meetings started with a whiteboard. We wrote everything we thought fans (and ourselves) would most want to find, if they were inside star Wars galaxy. The wireaber driving was right at the top of that list, but we knew that if we were to do that, we should do it right. We went through many different mechanics, inside and out with our partners at Ninja Theory, before we got to the point where you felt like you were going to hit, blow an iron, or block a blaster fire. We tested it regularly and returned feedback until we got it right.
There are so many parts that take you through the experience, but my favorite is still the first episode. The moment when Darth Vader first approaches you is something that cannot be described (but I'll try). It's great when her eyes are following you and talking to you directly. I've seen some people get up and down in his face, and some glisten a bit or even come back, but his presence is shocking, and it's unforgettable.
Our hard work has been recognized, along with Vader Immortal winning the Best AV / VR Game at the 2020 GDC Awards, and the Producers Guild Innovation Award earlier this year.
The team is hard at work reaching into this story and working for PS VR, and we can't wait for you all to see it and meet Vader's face-to-face. We will have more to share in the coming months.
