The Shinra Inc. company found in the North Crater the remains of an ancient creature. Something that they believed is a Cetra, an ancient race with magical powers that had once inhabited the world. Shinra's intention was to use his cells to create humans and that they had the powers of the Elders. It was then that he was born Jénova Project, led by Professor Gast, who divided his study into two branches. The one led by Professor Hojo was baptized as Project S, while Professor Hollander was in charge of Project G.

Hojo and his assistant Lucrecia they injected cells of Jénova in their own son when he was still in his fetal state. When she gave birth to her son, Sefirot (also known as Sephiroth) was born although Lucrecia, regretting not being able to have her son nearby, fled weeks later seeking her own death.
